Not Recommended

We stayed at the hotel on the first night on arriving to mexico.

I can't really comment on the other amenities of the hotel, but
the room was not so good.

It had a mold scent and the A/C unit was quite outdated (not
uncommon in Mexico, though) that meant noisy and not so good
at keeping the temperature of the room even.
The bathroom also looked ugly, while i can't say it was really dirty.

The shower/wc room had no air source, and that was not good,
to say the least.

This is a Hotel i would not recommend.

Unique Quality: The guarded parking lot.

Better than expected - good, with some issues.

Based on many of the 'horror story' Internet reviews I read just before leaving on my 7-day honeymoon over Christmas and New Year's 2004, I was expecting Dos Playas to be a roach-infested, falling-down horrible excuse for a facility.

Rest assured, this is *not* the case.

The room we had was in 'A' building, overlooking the edge of Playa Tortugas and Fat Tuesday. It had not been renovated, but was clean and and in good order. The ground floor was under renovation when we arrived. The room AC worked well. The washroom was in order, and the toilet worked for the most part. We rented a safety deposit box at reception for our return tickets, passports and money.

The food at Las Guacamayas buffet restaurant was simple yet flavourful. I have a sensitive stomach and cannot eat many foods here in Canada, but nothing made me ill at the hotel.

We paid little notice to the entertainment at poolside, as we did many day trips. Organized exercise, pool volleyball and chess were among the daily activities. Pub crawl trips were organized nightly.

We had no problems with being robbed or treated poorly by the staff. In fact, the staff went out of their way to be helpful whenever they could.

The issues we had were minor:

- the room phone wasn't working, likely due to the renovations on the ground floor (there were pay phones on site, however)
- the toilet would occasionally not completely flush, but the bits would go after a few flushes - no overflow problems
- the balcony door latch was a bit wonky, it took us a few minutes to get it to lock and unlock, but once it was locked it would stay that way
- the cable TV only had 11-12 working channels for the first few days (still, there were few English channels, but that was fine)
- they ran out of house wine and it took a few days to get some more - they still had beer and mixed drinks
- some nights when dinner was moved next door, no signs were posted - the bar staff would direct you, of course.

Overall, it is a comfortable, clean place to spend a vacation!

Unique Quality: - great view and access to Playa Tortugas
- good buffet
- friendly staff

Dos Playas

I stayed 2 nights at the 2-Star-Hotel Dos Playas. This hotel is not on the main beach. But it is very good situated, if you want more than just beach.
It is directly on two little beaches and not too far from the city centre, which can easily reached by bus. The hotels on the long white sandy beach are usually more expensive.

Unique Quality: This is a photo of the hotel El Pueblito. I am not shure, whether it still has this name. It is a very nice 3-star-hotel.

We stayed in Dos playas, Cancum . The apt. had the bare nessessities but cleaned everyday and change of sheets and towels. The staff were friendly and helpful. It has its own small pool but with the beach, where the sand is white and the sea is green, close by,was often ignored. It has a harbour where the boats to the Islands departed everyday. We went on the boat trip to the Island of merjeries. It was a brilliant trip. Complimentry drinks, fun and games, and music on board started you off in the holiday mood.Once on the island there were many things on offer for you to do.The inclusive meal was excellent with many choices and a mexican band played to you while you ate, giving you the feeling that you really are in the Carribean! After our return from a trip in a glass bottomed boat to see the coral reef we went to see the sharks where we had the opportunity to hold one in our arms ..and kissed it! Recommended tours are, Chichen -Ista for those that like ancient history and all its glory. Xcaret with its underground and mayon rivers,a must for all snorklers, Take a sea trek, walk on the bottom of the sea! ..an experience of a life time .Swim with the dolphins, feel the love and tranquility from these wonderful creatures and many more activities. The day ended by a spectacular night show of sights and sounds of mexico,s regional music and dance. And for all lovers of snorkling a visit to Xel-Ha is a must with it's parrot fish lagoon. Enjoy the many activities, sea trek. swim with dolpins , walk the path of wind, Mo's flight, snuba adventures and many more . every one of the tours gave great value for money. all very enjoyable ..We enjoyed the whole aspect of Cancum and recommend it. The area is beautiful the food good the people friendly..A lovely visit.. first time..but not the last.

Good value, Great people

After reading some reviews we were wondering what we were in for. If you're a down to earth person and reasonable you'll like it. Front desk area is a bit dingy, but staff are nice. Food is fine - nothing fancy - but good. The beach is nice to swim at - yes there's some seaweed - it's a SEA - hello! It's next to the booze-cruise dock, but it's not like the boats run you over. The beach to the left of the dock is really nice, and local people hang out there which is really great to get some non-tourist interaction. The grounds are nice, with a good view of the beach. We happened to get a really small basic room - but everything worked and was clean. It's close to downtown and the clubbing area. It's not overly tranquil - right next to Fat Tuesdays - but if you want tranquil don't come to Cancun. The staff were all friendly. The guests were friendly. People really mingled which I never see happen at the 5 star places I've stayed at. The washroom by the pool is gross - but get over it. The pool was adequate - but who cares when you have WILLY and TACO there - they are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Don't let the negative reviews scare you off. It really is good. I'd go back.

The first few days at Dos Playos were okay. Until the security at the hotel robbed my hotel room. They stole numerous valuabe things. They also robbed three other hotel rooms within the same week. They break into your room when you leave at night to go to the clubs. They have several keys to your room. This is a piece of crap motel 2, I would never stay there again. They served the nastiest food on earth, and they're vodka was out of a tap.

Dos Playas Cancun?

by HereFishie

I am thinking of booking a package vacation there - we love quiet out of the way places but also like CLEAN.

What could we expect here? One site said this is a hostel?? How can one site say that & the other not?
As a reference is it anything like the Fiesta INN in San Jose del Cabo( if you know of it)?

Thanks for your replies.
