Beware Of $40,000+ Credit Card Fraud

I stayed at the Gran Melia Hotel Cancun in December of 2011.

The hotel was nice but the construction of the place is a bit clunky. The bathroom shower is impossible to use. The button that switches the faucet to shower is usually corroded so a hotel employee needs to come in and spray some lubricant to get it working. This happened in 2 rooms. Throughout the room you'll notice weird layouts. For example a small step into the bathroom that you'll trip on and another small 3 inch step from the entrance. Like most resorts they nickel and dime you on everything. The wifi is 23 bucks a day. The taxi cabs at the entrance charge an extra fee and so on.

All this was not enough for me to merit a review until the day I checked out of the hotel. I came home to find that someone at the hotel tried to charge $40000+ on the credit card I used to register at the hotel. I used it nowhere else at the hotel so it had to have been someone at the front desk who used my credit card number. What makes this an even bigger outrage is the lack of customer service contact to resolve the issue. I tried calling the gran melia 800 line to get through to the hotel management in Cancun but instead was sent to the Sol-Melia regional corporate headquarters in Miami, Florida: 305-350-9828.

Try calling them and getting through to customer service. The automated phone service hangs up on you when you try to connect to customer service. I then tried contacting their sales department. Of course there is someone willing to answer the phone and I told them about my problem. The sales associate informed me that NOBODY works in customer service. I left a voicemail with a corporate manager and have yet to get a return. My only resolution is to post this as a warning to future customers instead.

Nice place but....

We just recently returned from a stay at the Gran Melia Cancun in June. We booked a room with a lagoon view, all-inclusive plan. The huge hotel complex is beautiful with pyramid architecture, although a little aged and in need of some maintenance. The lobby with its hanging vines, and fish pools is beautiful but not air conditioned. It tends to get really humid. The staff is excellent. I read reports of rude employees at the front desk but I didn't encounter any. Our room was of decent size, though not fancy. But frankly I didn't spend much time there anyway. The maid service was excellent. There are several nice swimming pools to choose from with plenty of chairs but if you want the prime seats, you'll need to get up early to put your towels on them. The restaurants range from buffet to fancy. The quality of the food is average to very good. The beach is large but the surf tends to be rough. The negatives: The resort is large and you have to do a lot of walking. There is basically no nightlife, so if you want entertainment you have to catch a bus to go to the bars/dance clubs. Plus, it's a long walk to get the main street to catch a bus. The beach bar closes around 5:00pm and the pool bar around 7:00pm so that leaves the small lobby bar as the only one left open. I think that's too early. And because not all guests opt for the All-Inclusive plan, everyone has to sign for everything. My main complaint with the resort is that its all-inclusive plan isn't really "all-inclusive". The plan has many limitations that you are unaware of until you get there. For instance, room service is included but you have to pay a delivery fee. Some items on the menu are an extra charge(premium beef/lobster). Playing the golf course is included, but there's club rental. The spa is included but massages are extra. Some minibar items are included but not others (coffee, premium bottled water). Too many times I had to be sure I wasn't charged for something. When I'm on vacation, I don't want to have to think. :) So overall, while this was a very nice resort and I had a good time there, I'm probably one and done with the Gran Melia. There are plenty of comparable resorts for the same price with better AI plans.

Unique Quality: The lobby area with its towering hanging vines and fish pools. The pyramid architecture. Nice swimming pools. Great beach.

Very disapointed

We just came back from Gran Melia in Cancun after we stayed for 7 days 28 Dec 2010 through 4 January 2011.
It was our second time visiting Cancun and we were very disapointed by their service, location and food.We had the All inclusive package and we were sorry that we paid so much for what they offered. The food at the bufet was bad, on the terrace was better but you had to wait a long time for somebody to take the orders. We tried several times to book reservation at the Tempo restaurant and every time we were told that it has been booked already and to try for the next day. Fianlly I got to talk to a manager there and they let us dinne in there. If you are all inclusive the service is bad because they want to serve better the people with no inclusive to get better tips. I would NOT recommend this hotel to anybody that has been before to a different resort in Cancun.
The beach is beautiful but there are no umbrellas at all on the beach and no servers. If you want to have a drink to have to go by the pool and order one.
They do not have AC in the lobby so it is hot most of the time.
I will never go back.....

Gran Melia Cancun - nice but expensive

My husband and I just got back from staying at the Gran Melia, Cancun (10/6-10/16). We’ve got a special deal in the hotel’s website and paid a promotional rate of US$ 99.00 per night for a lagoon view room. The hotel is beautiful and well kept. It has many internal gardens and fountains. We did have a nice lagoon view from our balcony, and the room was nice and clean, exactly as described in their website. The food and drinks are overpriced, from breakfast to dinner (US$ 21.00 per person for a breakfast buffet was a little too much). We bought bottled water and snacks in a grocery store nearby and brought that to our room. We saved a lot of money by doing that, and we noticed that other guests were doing the same. The staff is friendly, but they take their time. Don’t expect fast service. The beach bar should have more options in the menu, and the service should be more efficient. The time share sales reps are placed on every floor, at every entrance and exit to the hotel, in the lobby and at the exit leading out to the pool. They are annoying, pushy, obnoxious and unrelenting. Be prepared to say “no” several times, and don’t waste your precious time with them, unless you intend to buy their product.
It’s a nice hotel to spend your vacation, but overall it’s too expensive.

Unique Quality: The pools are beautiful, and the gardens are well maintained.

Location Location Location

Great All-Inclusive hotel.
Situated just opposite a large shopping mall which has a cinema, bowling alley and loads of shops, perfect if the weathers crap!
Great choice of restaurans too.
Bus services run every few minutes along the road and costs about 10pence to get into Downtown for more eateries, disco's etc.
Very safe environment and the people were great.

Unique Quality: Superb location and great Lizzards!

Its nice, if you can afford it

The grand melia cancun hotel is a beutiful place which my parents love to go. I have never traveled to Cancun on my own so this is the only place I have stayed. It is luxurious and very spacious...I give it two thums up. It has a few bad ass pools and the staff is friendly. Definitly a great place to stay if you arewilling to spend the bucks.

Unique Quality: the hotel is well kept and has floral arangements draping from the floors above. It is hard to describe except you could probably take a virtual tour online....I dunno.

Melia Cancun...

MELIA CANCUN
Melia Cancun Beach & Spa Resort Paseo Kukulkan km 16.5. Cancun, Q. Roo 77500. Rate Range: From $190 to $330 per night
This resort resembles a Mayan Temple and has the largest hotel atrium in the Mexican Caribbean. A nice hotel with great views and swimming pools. What I remember best were the endless breakfasts at the sea shore, at one of the swimming pool restaurants. Fruit juices, cereals, toasts, scrambled eggs, ham, yoghourt, croissants, omelettes.... and back to the buffet again!!!

Beware Gran Melia Cancun

BEWARE GRAN MELIA CANCUNJune 26, 2003If you are planning on making reservation at the Gran Melia Cancun, please read this review along with another review (that we found) at web site: ... under Charlene from Canada before you put your life and the life of your love ones at risk. When we first arrived at the 5 star resort we were impressed with the size and all the plants surrounding the main entrance. As we walked through the lobby and the hallways it felt very humid, deserted, and the hallways were filled with towels and buckets due to water leaking from the ceilings throughout our six-night stay.On June 26th (our last night), my husband and I had gone to bed around 2:35 a.m. and someone came into our LOCKED ROOM and robbed us during our sleep. We did not know that we were robbed until we woke up around 9:00 a.m. They took my husbands watch and cash value of $250.00 U.S. dollars. When my husband called the front desk for security, two personnel (a security officer and a lady) came to take down our report in broken English. Within 10 minutes, another employee named Vidal Espinoza came up to our room and watched as the security officer searched our belongings. When I asked Vidal if this has happened before he said, Yes, but not often. After the search, they said that they would get back to us in 3 hours with the final investigation. When we came back to the hotel after lunch for an update we were not assisted in a professional way. Jose P. Caballero (front desk manager) made my husband and I waited for nearly 1 hour before assisting us. He said that he would get the head security to speak with us. We waited and never saw or spoke with a head security person. Jose tried to brush us off and denied us of our request to speak with the upper level management. All that Jose showed us was a list of people who had a key to our room (multiple hotel employees had keys to our room). He did not show us a fingerprint investigation like he had promised. Bottom line, Jose was not able to give us an explanation to how our money and my husbands watch were stolen from our room while we were sleeping. In the end, Jose did not show or have empathy for our lost and insisted that we made up this factual story. Please read the above web site in paragraph 4 if you do not believe us.$250.00 and a watch are not very much to us, but our concern was our safety. We could have been victims of a homicide, rape (myself), or injured if there had been a confrontation if we had woken up during the robbery. For your safety and service, we would not recommend anyone to stay at the so called 5 star resort at the Gran Melia Cancun. We have filed a complaint to the hotel, travel agency, president-Gabriel Escarrer, and owner, Mr. Rolf Salomon. Stevedang2003@yahoo.com Loi and Steve Dang

My husband and I stayed at the gran melia June 10th thru June 17th. The beach and pool area were beautiful. There are plenty of papalas and lounge chairs near the pool and the beach. We did encounter many rude staff members but there were also polite helpful staff. The hotel is older and has a strong mildew odor in the room and the lobby areas. Air-conditioning in the room had to be fixed also. Drinks and soda at the bar were very overpriced and not too good either. The only thing that impressed me with this hotel was the beach and pool area. We walked next door to the jw marriott and it was beautiful inside and out. I would only recommend the gran melia if you are getting a great deal, but it would be worth the little extra money to stay somewhere else. I have seen ratings of 4 and 5 stars for this hotel, I would give it a two. Please email me if I can answer any questions. lgilin69@comcast.net

Melia Cancun...the best

by A TripAdvisor Member

This was the first trip that my husband and I have ever taken together and after 16 years we deserved the luxury that the Melia had to offer. We were in awe of the beauty that surrounded us. We did not have one bad experience so I will just share some advice. Since the Melia is not an all inclusive hotel we found the food and drinks to be very expensive so we took the bus to town (about 25 min ride) and purchased breakfast food, a styrofoam cooler, beer and snacks. We usually headed to the beach in the morning with cooler in tow and then bought a salad or sandwich (about $4 a piece) from the store inside the hotel. If you order 2 burgers and 2 beers from the beach cabana expect about 30 dollars to be put on your room tab. Everyone has to experience the swim up bar and a fru fru drink though. The icy blended drink in a hollowed out pineapple with a fruity face was 10 bucks but you gotta try one for the fun of it. We then went out to dinner everynight to a different Cancun resturant using Brant Boston's 2 for 1 card (I found it on the internet and the $15 fee paid for itself the first day). The Melia is not in the heart of the hotel zone therefore it is quiet and the traffic outfront is minimal. Take advantage of Aqua World right across the street. The hotel sells packages that are worth looking at. Don't go snorkeling on the ocean side, go on the lagoon side (much calmer and enjoyable). We did both and the ocean was a scary experience due to the waves and the vastness of it all. We had no trouble traveling by bus and only took a taxi once. We found the hotel night life almost non exisitant and the hotel bars were always empty so we just went looking for fun at night and found it everywhere no matter where we went. Empty bars and quiet pools mean NO SPRING BREAKERS to intrupt your relaxing vacation. It was fun to go elsewhere and watch the spring break generated energy but it sure was nice to sleep and relax in peace. We had friends staying at a all inclusive hotel in the "p content to pay the extra cost for food and the classy Melia. (I have to say there were rather jealous after seeing the Melia too). So... go, enjoy and treat yourself....it's worth every penny. Take alot of American dollar bills. I took $100 worth and slipped the very helpful staff a dollar or two at every opportunity to assure continued pamering. They were great and I wanted them to know I appreciated them making my vacation a dream come true! I'd love to hear from others that went to or are going to the Grand Melia!!

Can't say much about this hotel because we experienced broken chip glass, and ants wondering in the room. My husband was hurt by a (small) chip glass which we are sure that it's from the previous guest. Then, we asked for the thorough room cleaning, the housekeeping sent someone who doesn't speaks english. Well, because of miscommunication, she clean the place for like 3 times which I think it's not neccesary.

I Went for my Honeymoon At beguining of Jan 2003. I paid $1,200 bucks for Ocean View under a honey moon package, including transportation and and one dinner for two. But at the time that We got to the Gran Melia CAncun they upgrade our package and they gave us a luxurius room at the "Servicio Real" ( the first pyramid at the left corner) this is like a VIP area , that include breakfast everyday, appetizers and open bar from 7pm to 9pm ( in the 8 days that we stayed there they never repeat the menu) , at the time that we enter in our room we found a Champagne bottle and all the bed full of roses petals..IT was Awsome! The beach abd sand of Cancun are one of the best that I ever seen......the staff is excellent, the italian restaurant is great, we had a massage sesion...and you fill that you are in a dream. The architecture of the hotel is majestuosy. Cancun and the Melia is a Place to stay!
