mosquito repellent
You have got to bring mosquito repellent preferably something with Deet. The mosquitos are fierce here. A lotion repellent seemed to work best as you have constantly reapply because of the high humidity and perspiration loss.

I am considering renting a car in Cancun and driving to Chetumal. I will need to find a secure place to park the car in Chetumal while I spend 3 days in San Pedro, Belize. I'm hoping that someone can recommend a place to park the rental car in Chetumal that is free or very inexpensive.
why would you pay to rent a car for 3 days when you are not going to use it? you are willing to eat that cost but then want somewhere free to park it. if it's free, it's not going to be secure.
We had drinks at the Holiday Inn in downtown Chetumal. I think they have a parking lot. You might be able to pay them to park the car in their parking lot, which would be safer than leaving it on the steet somewhere in residential Chetumal.
Why wouldn't you just drive the car to San Pedro?

Didn't see many tourist here. It is minutes drive from the Belize border. I spent 2 days here and enjoyed it as it broke up the 25 hour coach ride from Oaxaca to Playa Del Carmen. Take a trip to 'Laguna de siete colores' its a fresh water lake with, as the name would suggest, water colored in 7 different vivid blues.
"Oh! Let us grieve for they have arrived! From the east they came, the bearded men, the strangers from the land, the blonde men arrived in these lands."
This sentence was on a wall of the Museo de la Cultura Maya of this town which was supposed to be only a transit place from where to take the bus to Belize but which turned out to be a lovely town and which had "then" a personal story but I won't bother you with this, let's go to the useful tips...
