Vila Las Anclas: Apartment-style inn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Each apartment is given the name of some native wildlife... mine was Vila Acatraces (Pelican House). The apartments are all accessible by garden-entrance doors and are two floors high. Downstairs there is a kitchen/eating area and a living room; up a wrought iron spiral staircase are the bedroom and bath. You can't get food at the hotel, but there are plenty of options nearby. There also is no pool, but who needs one when you can go to the beach?
You get a key to the front gate--just like you were a member of the family!

I got a discount (from $80 to $70) by asking my dive operator to make the booking for me.

The hotel is located on the first major street behind the shoreline road, and therefore is much quieter than the busy tourist-shop-and-chain-restaurant avenue where you find the mass of tourists. Even so, it is far from isloated, and you can easily find places to eat, internet cafes, dive shops... in short everything you need!

Villablanca Garden hotel: A Taste of Old Mexico
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We randomly picked a hotel on Expedia.com and really lucked out! Villablanca garden hotel is a stunningly beatiful rustic hotel with a very tropical feel. It consists of beautiful cottages and suites surrounded by rain forest. We lucked out and got upgraded out of our budget room to a luxurious cottage with 2 bathrooms and a living room area for the same price to a malfunctioning airconditioner. If you are looking for authentic mexican lodging, more unique than luxurious, Villablanca is the place, not to mention the incredible snorkelling just across the street!

The sales manager (name escapes me) is originally from the US and speaks perfect english as most people in Cozumel do. She gives great travel tips as she serves cervezas and quesadillas in the outdoor cafe next to the pool. The breakfast takes a while, but is great!

Fiesta Americana: Not fancy, but good enough
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is an all-inclusive resort. I had heard horrible reviews about the place and was a bit nervous about our accomodations.
When we arrived, I was a bit put out that we could not get into our rooms until 3:30, (It was 9:30 am) but the staff was friendly and took our luggage. If the Dive House was not across the street and we were not storing our dive gear there, I might have been more annoyed.
The rooms were large and the a/c was FREEZING! This is Mexico and so it was not fancy. I'm sure that this hotel was the best back in the 1970's. But again, the staff was great and that makes all the difference. I was there to dive not lounge around the hotel.
The buffet was nothing to write home about, but it was filling and after all day on the boat, I just wanted to eat and go to bed.
The drinks were quite strong, even if the selection was a bit limited.
If I had not been there to dive, I might have found fault in this hotel, but as my days were very occupied, I thought it was very relaxing not to have to worry about what to eat, where, and how to get there. It was nice also to have paid a flat rate and not to have to worry about how much vacation money was being spent on food and drinks.

The view was amazing! I loved that the Dive House was across the street, it was as if I could fall out of bed and go diving!

I did think that the price that we paid was a bit much, but it was more of the fault of the travel agent we booked with than the hotel.

    Aguilar Hotel: Right in town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel is still standing in 2007, but it is for sale

We picked the absolutely cheapest accomodation that was available. This was it. The service was fine - the hotel rooms look exactly the way they are pictured on the website. There was only about one person on the staff that spoke English (which is why you have to ask for Mayte if you phone from the states).

Bob arrived first on an AA flight from Miami (which he got by trading in an unused ticket), and I had a Delta codeshare flight which I got by taking a bump. When I got there, I couldn't figure out how to tell them that I wanted his room. They took me to a room up on the second floor that was obviously unoccupied. So I went out on the balcony and yelled for Bob. He was in a room just downstairs from where I was - he had the room door open a bit and was kind of listening out for me.

They were A/C and lower rates are available if you want only a fan. We had no TV or phone. TV's are available for an additional $2 US.

The rooms are around a patio which includes a lot of nice landscaping and a pool, plus there is off street parking for vehicles. It was very quiet and we loved being able to walk around town and eat at the various restaurants. There were lines for hanging dive gear to dry.

For a view of the inside of the room, see Packing Tips

The website says: "Room deposits must be sent in the form of traveler's checks (all prices are + 12% tax - Sorry, No Credit Cards Accepted)". I had a check from the travel agency to pay them with because the mail is unreliable.

Ocean View on the Upper Deck: Our Cabin
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Our cabin (Ocean View on the Upper Deck) was clean, spacious, and nice, with two great terry cloth robes. They are really nice and you can buy new one to take home. The cabin (Carnival calls it – the stateroom) was big - around 185 square feet. The cabin bathroom was immaculate. We took Renuzit’s Odor neutralizer with us – it helped to kill slight smell of tobacco smoke from the fabric – previous residents’ heritage. Due to the air freshener the odor disappeared in a matter of seconds. The cabin had two twin beds that can be configured into a queen-size bed. Lighting was good with individual reading lights at each bed. Satellite television and telephone are standard amenities. You can even set up a wake-up call through your telephone in your cabin. Drawer and closet space was more than adequate for two of us. In-room safety Deposit box was available too (at no extra charge). To lock/unlock your safe, you your credit card .

Stanislava, our room steward, was very attentive and nice. Everyday she cleaned our room two – three times a day and every night she left a cute towel animal and chocolates on the pillows. If we happened to show up when she was in the middle of cleaning, she always left and said she would be back when we left our cabin.

    Wonderful!

Every room has an ocean view, great pools, mini golf, snorkeling, live shows at dinner, snack bar open all afternoon, and the food was out of this world. You could have a real meal and a margarita any time of day you wanted.

Palma Dorada Inn: A Downtown-Down home Look
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We did not stay here, but wanted to provide the sample of what may be expected in downtown San Miguel stays. I imagine most tourists stay out of this perimeter in high rise hotels/condos. I imagine most tourists stay outside of downtown in a high rise/condo, but this experience could be one to remember.

They have 18 rooms and meal plan packages in addition to the kitchenettes and AC

Hotel El Marques: One of the More Central Located
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We did not-but I wanted to provide the "flavor" for what you could expect in hotel stays close in the downtown city area of San Miguel. They seem to leave a lot to be desired, but prices are surely reasonable. The Anduze family operates this hotel Marques for 25 years. Price is $35-40 a nite for two. it has cable TV, AC and a fridge per the ad.

The location is one good feature. The outside appeared to be maybe more "dingy" than inside. Features of amenities sound good. The noise from the street may be a problem with location near the Plaza square

Iberostar Cozumel: Like living in the rainforest
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It was great. Everyone has their own "cabana" type room with a thatched roof, patio and hammock. It is as if the hotel had been plopped in the middle of the rain forest. There are animals everywhere: flamingos, peacocks, iguanas, parrots.

Hotel Scorpion: Right in the middle of neighborhood

  • We did not stay here, but wanted to provide the view of what may be available in downtown lower end pricing. This could be one of those. It looked like a rather interesting place, but am not sure if I would venture inside myself.

Have no idea-but the front my tip you off
