One of the More Central Located
We did not-but I wanted to provide the "flavor" for what you could expect in hotel stays close in the downtown city area of San Miguel. They seem to leave a lot to be desired, but prices are surely reasonable. The Anduze family operates this hotel Marques for 25 years. Price is $35-40 a nite for two. it has cable TV, AC and a fridge per the ad.
Unique Quality: The location is one good feature. The outside appeared to be maybe more "dingy" than inside. Features of amenities sound good. The noise from the street may be a problem with location near the Plaza square

Decent budget hotel in the center of San Miguel
We went to Cozumel without hotel reservations - it was the low season and we wanted to check out accommodations in person before choosing them. I had a list of several to look at. We chose El Marques for its location (1/2 block off plaza and one block from oceanfront - although there is no beach) and the price - under $30 a night with airconditioning and a small refrigerator. They gave us a 10% discount because we stayed seven days, and the family that runs the hotel was extremely helpful. Downstairs is a car/moped rental company.
Unique Quality: Proximity to the plaza, where there were restaurants, shopping, lots of people to talk to, and live music almost every night was the biggest plus. The hotel is nothing fancy, but it was clean, with daily maid service, had a nice tile shower, air conditioning, two beds, a small balcony, a refrigerator - we found two grocery stores - one by the plaza and one on the main street going down towards the museum.
