HOSTEL & CABANAS IDA Y VUELTA CAMPING: THE CHEAPEST OPTION IN TOWN...
Small Hostel consisting of ten cabins, located near the beach, city center and all services. Surrounded by coconuts, mangroves and palm trees has a rather broad garden. An appropriate athmosphere in which to hang a hammock and take a "sacred nap ", where people can socialize and enjoy their vacation within nature.
Warm and comfortable, the hostel offers to backpackers the chance to sleep in hammocks or beds in small wooden huts protected with mosquito net or pitch a tent on soft sand. Some bungalows palafito style with private bathroom to please couples and honeymooners and a fully equipped house, favorite option of families and small groups who want a bit more of privacy, are available as well in the property. Finally, guests can have hot water, fans, kitchen, small snack bar, Wi-Fi, relaxation area and reception in different languages.
Bed or hammock in dorm: from 9 USD per night/person
Private Bungalow with s/ Bathroom: from 25 USD per night/4 persons
Private Cabin Ensuite: from 30 USD per night/2 persons
Private House: from 55 USD per night/2 persons

Unique Quality: Great property design, outstanding facilities, lovely staff, excellent price for accommodation and tours (whale shark tour), central location, clean and comfortable.

Villa los Mapaches: Place to Avoid on Isla Holbox
Villa los Mapaches looked great on the Internet. But the place was under construction the whole time I was there -- hurricane damage -- and the hammering was incessant. The owner refused to change my room or refund my money when I wanted to leave. She was the opposite of what a hotel owner should be. Really awful experience. I couldn't wait to get out.
I fled to Posada Mawimbi, which is absolutely the best value on the island, a beautiful place with great, hospitable, efficient owners.
Unique Quality: Pretty place and good location but run by vipers.

Villa Flamingos: Manglar(swamp) behind Villa Flamingos
I have stayed here a myriad of times and been very happy with the accomodations and the service. Sometimes the mosquitoes are fierce and sometimes they are non-existent. That is true wherever you stay on Holbox - on the beach, in town, in the jungle, etc. They are a fact of life on the island. And, no one sells repellant on the island that contains DEET - a necessary ingredient IMO.
Regarding the swamp behind the facility, it is protected by law. To change it, fill it in, etc. would cause huge fines to be levied against the perpetrator by the Mexican version of the EPA. If you walk along that swamp, you will find that it also runs behind Esmeralda, Delfines, Xaloc, Paraiso del Mar, etc. The trash is a result of both the destruction of Wilma and the carelessness of locals and tourists.
Unique Quality: Quiet and solitude.
Nice pool.
All rooms have an ocean view.
Decent restaurant.
Helpful and friendly staff.
Least expensive on the island for hotels offering same amenities.

villa flamingos: holbox biting insects
We stayed at Villas flamingos over the Christmas holiday. We booked our trip through www.turqreef.com. The facility is nice and clean and the staff is friendly. I would not, however, recommend that anyone visit this location due to the millions of biting insects. Behind the hotel is a large area of stagnant, dirty water that is a breeding ground for all of these insects. We were to have stayed 8 days, but had to cut our visit short due to insect bites. We tried 3 different repellants that we bought on the island and none were effective. I even took benadryl tablets and used benadryl spray without relief. We had to see a physician upon our return and get steroid injections. Also, we paid STP Caribe $230.00 u.s. dollars for our transfer from Cancun to Chiquila, round trip for two people. When we left, we found out that one of the couples in the van paid $40.00 u.s. dollars for two people, one way. Also, you could take a taxi one way for $60.00, split between 4 people.
Unique Quality: Nothing about the facility can make up for the misery we dealt with due to the bugs. And I cant emphasize enough how disgusting the "mangroves" are behind the facility. Brown, standing water bordered by discarded trash.

La Posada Mawimbi: "Beach-front" at its best
I could gush hours about this truly marvellous place, but to sum it up:
It was a perfect stay! The staff is friendly, the breakfast is good, the rooms are unique and decorated with passion, it's very quiet - you fall asleep only with the sound of the ocean in the background,.....
Unique Quality: Friendly Italian owner. GREAT rooms right in front of the ocean! A perfect island.

Amigo's House: Bad business
We recently rented Amigo's House in Holbox, pre-paying for a 4 night stay. We were not informed by the owner of any problems with the highway to Chiquila, nor of the condition of the island prior to our stay. Due to extreme damage from last year's hurricane, flooding, and dangerous swarms of mosquitoes, we were unable to stay for the 4 nights. When we requested a refund of the time not used, we were denied, even though complete information had not been given to us at the time of booking. (we only booked 2 weeks before we went)

Posada Mawimbi Hotel: Holbox Great Place To Stay
OK, if you have been to Cancun and loved it, stay there again, do not go to Isla Holbox. If you want to stay in a "hostel" type place, look for other advise as its around but not for us. If staying in a laid back, easy going fishing village full of friendly people is what you like, then this is it. I visited Holbox in August 2006 with my fiancée and we had a blast, and Mawimbi is the place to stay. Onny, the owner, and her husband Carmelo have built a beautiful small hotel right on the beach, which is only a short stroll from the downtown square. We stayed the first night in on of the Cabanas, then moved to the oceanfront suite. Could not be happier with either room. The suite was clean, had a large bathroom, plenty of hot water, small frig. and large comfortable bed. Small front porch with two chairs looking thru palms right out to the water. Friendly staff and owners, what more could you want....o that's right, whale sharks. Do some homework and go do this snorkel adventure, it’s unbelievable and Onny will set it up for you. Seriously, go with the right attitude, relax, laugh at things and you will love this island and hotel.
Unique Quality: (I will add photo's soon!)

Casa Amigos.: Casa Amigos: private house.
Mr. Sodypop and I plus one of our friends ( the 4th person had an emergancy and could not come) stayed at Casa Amigos. This place has a full kitchen, dining table, couches, two separate rooms with private bathroom (showers) king sizes bed plus two twin beds (one slides under the other) roof access, TV and AC. I guess there is a small room also available ( did not see whether it had a bath or not). We paid $100 a night. It is not overlooking the ocean but behind Bawimbi Hotel, the Fisherman Club and school. We just walk thru the school.
This is not very fancy but it worked for us.

Unique Quality: Did I say it was $100 for the whole place? they also have a couple that lives directly across Casa Amigos that oversees the house and cleans it. They were the nicest people.

Posada Mawimbi: Great Atmosphere, Great Price
The atmosphere at the Mawimbi can't be beat. It's right on the beach, surrounded by coconut trees. It's laid back and the owners, Onny and Carmello, are very nice.
The water is turquoise and swimable. No sea-grass. The sunsets are awe inspiring.
Unique Quality: Each room has a balcony with a small table and stools. The ashtrays are seashells filled with sand.
The breakfast is good. (Vegetarians will fare ok.)
Want a coconut drink? Let one of the staff know and they will grab a machete, cut a coconut out of a tree, cut the top off, pop a straw in it, and hand it to you. You've never had coconut this fresh and delicious!
If you want to relax in a gorgeous setting at a reasonable price, this is the place for you.
