Playa Norte
by Enzyme_X
Most accomodation on Isla ar on the northern part, most beaches are on the southern part. To reach them you can take a taxi, rent a scooter or a golf cart. Or you can stay in town and go to Playa Norte. The beach is very nice. White sand that never gets hot, many palm trees that provide shade, several beach bars to freshen up, calm sea to swim in. And in low season there wont be lots of crowds.
There are several other beaches near, but they all face the open sea and were closed all the time due to high waves.
Snorkling
by senoritamc
First time snorklers take a local boat ride.
I had never snorkled before and they helped me out.
It was so fun.
When we got to the spot they put crackers in the water and the fish just went crazy.
I am glad I did not chicken out like Mike.
Before you get on one of these boats make sure they have safety equipment. You can bring your own snorkel gear but mine was cheap and kept breaking.
The owners of the boat had their own.
Golf Carts Galore
by Pat&ZoAnn
One of the favourite activities day-trippers from Cancun enjoy is renting a golf cart. We were on the island for a week and didn't rent one However, the parade of touristas started early, and lasted all day. It seems the rates are around 350 pesos per day, but you wouldnt need one all day, the island is pretty small.
Make a night of it!
by cjpindc about Casa O's
This restaurant is very nice and is also great for sunsets. We made reservations, which are recommended. Casa O's is located on the mid-southern west coast of Isla Mujeres. We took a taxi from the Posada del Mar and it took about 20 minutes to get to the restaurant. Once at Casa O's you have to navigate your way through the luscious scenery down to the edge of the ocean. The landscaping is very inviting and there is even a little pond and waterfall. Once at the restaurant you will be seated on one of three tiers. All of the tables have great views of the ocean and on clear days you can see Cancun. I recommend going when it is not very windy or rainy as this is an open air restaurant. The restaurant is set up underneath a palapa and has a nice wine list and semi full bar. The menu is sparce, although all if the choices our group made were excellent. Also, they offer all kinds of seafood and beef cooked any way you'd like it, so that offers more choices than the menu appears to have. We were greeted by the owner (Lynn) and her poodle (Chico). They were very graciousand accomodating. Lynn explained that Casa O's is named such because all of the chefs, and Chico, have names ending with an O. So in order to work there you need to make sure your name ends with an O, unless you the Owner which begins with an O. Casa O's also has boat slips and they are large enough to accomodate most average sized yachts while your noshing. I didn't notice any dinner music but it wasn't needed because it was very nice to listen to the sounds of the waves right underneath the restaurant. The steaks were excellent....very tender and nice sizes. The key lime pie was frozen but I think it was intentional. It was very good!
The Turtle Sanctuary
by cjpindc
The Turtle Sanctuary is a wonderful and very educational reserve for sea turtles. The reserve has the purpose of saving caribbean sea turtles but it is also a great stop on a day trip tour of the island. There are several turtle pools for viewing and the sactuary also offers guided tours. It took us about an hour to view everything and look in the gift shop. I would highly recommend a stop as the admission fee helps to preserve the giant sea turtles.
