Hostel on the beach.. can it get any better?!

I visited Isla Mujeres after recommendations from some travellers and advised to stay at Pocna.

I was given a good quality dorm room for 110 pesos a night, without realising the price of dorm rooms range from 90 to 110 pesos. They also have a camp garden where you can pitch a tent or sleep in a hammock for as little as 65 pesos a night. Alternative options are private rooms and double rooms etc for a bit more.

Here I met several travellers mainly from Europe, US and South Americas. We would sit in the large common area and discuss travels and day plans over breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or strong margaritas. It was very easy to meet people and socialise. The term 'youth hostel' is rather inaccurate as there were a number of middle aged - elderly people staying in the hostel, stating that friends of theirs had recommended the place and they were loving it.

Pocna offers free breakfast, however has a restaurant where you can buy cheap good quality food all day long, plus a bar which is open til 7pm and then a beach bar starting at 11pm. On your first night you are given a free drink voucher at the beach bar, and most of the cocktails are 2 for 1!

Activities such as organised snorkeling and hiring a bike are offered on a daily basis including the odd themed beach party. In fact Pocna gives you little reason to leave the accommodation.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Mexico. The island is lovely and Pocna provides the best opportunity to meet travellers and generally have an enjoyable experience on a small mexican island far removed from the blatant and intrusive commerce of Cancun. I remained here for the end of my travels and ditched the idea of staying in Cancun entirely

Unique Quality: Good Points:

1) Right on the beach
2) Relatively clean
3) Restaurant serving cheap good quality food all day
4) Large grounds including a camping ground for tents and hammocks
5) Several social areas including a place with pool table and table tennis, hammocks in one of the gardens, beach bar
6) 3 mins walk to Playa Norte (you can see it from Pocna)
7) Cheap dorms starting from 90 pesos
8) Beach party every night

Bad Points:

1) There is no internet access.. however there are plenty of internet cafes a few steps away for 10 pesos for 30 mins.
2) There is no public kitchen, so nowhere to cook your own food or even keep your water cold
3) No laundry, however there are laundry sites in town where they do the laundry for you!
4) Beach is lovely, but you are prohibited from swimming due to its rocky nature!
5) No locks provided on the lockers, so you would need to purchase one for yourself
6) No drinking alcohol bought from outside the premises
7) Limited access to electrical sockets. There were some in the bathrooms.. but thats the bathroom!

Nice backpackers hostel

This hostel is ok. I paid 39 pesos for a bed in a dormitory. They also have hammockspace for the same price.

Only hostel on island

This hostel lies in the northern part of the island, in the town. It's a very vivid place, with many travelers from all over the world. It's clean, but the rooms kind of reminded me of a prison. Well, that's not so important as we spent most of the time outside.
Hostel has a great lobby where guest hang around and talk, watch TV, or ley in hammocks.
Every now and then they organize beach partys.

Unique Quality: Private beach (although it was closed every day during my stay because of the waves); Playa Norte very close.
Very basic breakfast included.
Cheap meals.

"Quintana Roo, Mexico"

I visited Isla Mujeres (just off-shore from Cancun) in May, 2001. Snorkeling was excellent there. For 20.00 USD, I got a 5 hour snorkeling trip to local reefs, and a beach bbq of fish. The cheapest place to stay is at the Poc Na Hostel for 4.00 USD a night. I rented a bike and circled the Island, and stoped and snorkeled at a few beaches. It was hot there in May. Seafood is adbundant on Isla Mujeres, and a meal of pescado o camarones is always available.

"Mexican Food"

I truely great cusine experience can be had in Mexico.

"Go To the Beach!"

This is a beach in Cancun that locals hang out at.

Destination Ideas for a week in Mexico...

by cmb57

I have a free plane ticket that I can use to travel to Mexico, one-week's worth of vacation time, and not a ton of money. I'm a female in my mid-20s traveling alone and I'm trying to think of a good destination in Mexico to chill in for a week.

I'd ideally like to find a place where I can find a fun, safe, hostel near the beach with a good social scene since I want to meet as many people as possible. I love watersports, hanging out by the beach, walking and adventure activities/

What's the hostel situation like in Mexico? Similar to Europe and Australia or different?

I'm planning on traveling between January and March. My knowledge of places to go in Mexico is extremely limited, so any help would be welcomed!

Also, I'd prefer to go somewhere that's fairly near an international airport so I don't have to travel much within the country.

Cheers!

You might enjoy the Pacific side of Mexico and staying in places like Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco or Los Cabos. As far as hostels go, I have no idea what they are like in Mexico. Most large hotels will have private beaches and watersports. Going between Jan and March is a low travel time so you might be able to get a good hotel rather than a hostel.

although cancun would not be my first choice (too americanized for my liking) i have heard that the hostel in downtown is quite nice. it is fairly new. just a short bus ride to the hotel zone and the beaches.
