It's outside, just walk to your right once exiting the main door. I think you can purchase the bus ticket at the booth inside the airport (there's a stand there). No, you don't need to buy the tickets before you visit Mex.

There's a lot more information about transportation between Cancun Airport and Playa del Carmen: http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/Mexico/Estado_de_Quintana_Roo/Playa_del_Carmen-936544/Transportation-Playa_del_Carmen-R-1.html

Have a happy trip!

Yep, it's worse during spring break.

During off season, it's just fine, a regular touristy place, but as the post avobe says, look for the off the beaten path activities, they are worth it. Not sure about your plan, well, maybe you like playa or not, but the beach is nice, and yes, it's quiet different from cancun resort's profile. There's good diving trips, and mayan ruins and cenotes and a wow. Many people also decide to explore more inland too.

I am sure you will have a good trip, weather is usually good and there are different things to see. Blue waters are wonderful no matter where you see find them, always a gorgeous thing.

Cancun airport has 2 terminals and when I was there last year, the bus for Playa del Carmen left only from domestic terminal. It leaves every hour and you could purchase your ticket upon your arrival as above VTers said.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

Where the living and the spirits meet!

by whitneyone

You are going to be on the beach, you can't resist that, however, please force yourself to get off the sand and off to some of the spectacular ruins. Tulum is a mere 30 minutes drive from Playa Del Carmen. It's the closest and possibly the most beautiful. At Tulum, which is a set of Mayan ruins on a cliff overlooking the ocean, dating back to the 13th century, it's very alive with Iguanas!
Click on the photo, you can't miss him! Life goes on everywhere, even amid the ruins.

Swim with the Dolphins

by ScubaCat

Now's your chance to play, frolick and swim with these docile and loving creatures. Right next door to the Adventura Place is Puerto Aventura, a 10 minute walk from your hotel door to the Dolphins playground. During your 45 minute stint with the dolphins you'll learn how to handle them and where and where not to hang when the Dolphins pull you through the water or you use them as water ski's. Now that's fun. The Dolphins will come up and give you a hug and a kiss and if they take a liking to you will give you an extra long kiss. After the various stunts that you perform with the Dolphins, you have 15 minutes to just play with them. They will come up beside you & rub you, let you kiss them again and if your lucky enough get the opportunity to grab their dorsel fin and go for another ride. The Dolphin swim is the memory of a lifetime and 1 you should not miss. In order to keep your memories alive at the end of your 45 mins with the Dolphins you will have a chance to purchase the video made of you and your cohorts or purchase the still photos. I highly recommend buying the Video/DVD....these people put it together like a movie, credits and everything! So while your down Playa Del Carmen's way...go play with the Dolphins. The cost is nominal for one of the most thrilling 45 minutes of your life. $99.00

FERRY TO COZUMEL

by Maria_75

Ferries takes you out to the island of Cozumel. The ride takes about half an hour, and costs 10-15 USD for a roundtrip. The ferries goes almost every hour, but they will usually give you a timetable when you buy the ticket. Ticketbooths are all over the city, and they always have a sign telling you when the next boat leaves. The ferry dock is located south at 5ta Avenida. The sea can be quite rough so if you have problems with seasickness it can be a good idea to take a pill before you go.

Great breakfast place

by monicathedove about Le Vegabunda

This little place on 5th is the perfect breakfast restaurant. We enjoyed the food so much, we went back twice. The menu is Italian, Mexican, and American, with our favorites being the Popeye begal and the crepes.

ATV tour

by Conspirator

I haven't seen anyone else write a tip on this and I stumbled on it by accident, but it was simply AWESOME fun.

The proposition is simple - they give you an ATV (a 4-wheeled motorbike) and then take you hooning through the jungle on rough dirt tracks. Along the way, you stop for a swim at a crystal clear cenote and visit an underground cavern full of water, bats, stalactites and, courtesty of some comedians in my group, Gollum.

There were a lot of ladies and a couple of kids in our group, so pretty much anyone can do it, although there are no helmets so be careful and stay at the back if you're not confident.

However, if you want to go as fast as humanly possible with your screaming girlfriend clinging on to you for dear life, be quick and claim an ATV at the front of the line when they get assigned. Otherwise you may spend the tour behind some deadbeat, lamenting the lack of built in weaponry.

It's about $48 if you want your own ATV, or $38 each to share one between two. The cool yellow dust goggles come with the ticket.

You can book through a travel agent - we used Mayalum, on the corner of Calle 6 and 10th Ave.

The place itself is on the main highway just on the South side of town. You can take a cab there from 5th Ave in about 10 minutes for US$10 (probably less if you can be bothered to haggle). Just show the taxi driver the brochure and he'll know where to go. There are cabs waiting at the end of the trip too - be smart like the Conspirator and Agent 78 and grab one while everyone else from your tour is gawking over the for sale personalized photos that you're not going to buy anyway.
