To chichen itza

by DaveSamaroo

Dear Forum: I will be staying at the Mayan Palace, Riviera Maya, Km.48 Carr. Fed. Cancún - Playa Solidaridad, Playa del Carmen, Q.Roo-México. I am looking at options to get Chichen Itza for a day as I'll have 3 small children with me (2, 4, 7). Tours are of course an option but may be too structured for fidgety children. Questions:
(1) Is there a direct, comfortable public transportation service to Chichen Itza, any timetable info & how long will it take?
(2) Would you recommend renting car in Mexico to go to that area (safety concerns for foreigners) and is it relatively easy to get to Chichen Itza from where I am staying? How long will it take by car?
(3) Are there rental cars with GPS systems in Mexico e.g. like the Hertz Neverlost system?

Thanks

It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to get to Chichen Itza by car. There are no safety concerns if you travel during daytime, and you will do that. You do not even need GPS to get there, it is straight forward.

You can also travel by public bus but I think this is even more stressful than on a guided bus tour.

The main reason for renting a car would be for me that you can beat the crowds by an early start. (If you succeed to get the kids ready... ;-) )

This is quite a good website which gives you a lot of info about this trip:

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

Eat at the Beach Square (main plaza)

by peggydaly

You can get GREAT, cheap food at the square by the beach (Main Plaza) at Ave Juarez and 5 Ave. There are ladies close the the beach with fresh fruit, nuts, popcorn etc. But my FAVORITE is the tacos or tortas one can get (on the 5th ave side of the square. Definitely get the cochinita pibil. It is the tenderest pork you ever will try. about $.60 US ea. I NEVER had a problem eating street food in playa - and i tried it a lot.

Hit the taco stands from morning until afternoon - then they are gone. i found all the other restaurants on this plaza pretty crappy and about 100 times more expensive!

Side streets

by kyoub

Get off of the plaza and walk around some of the side streets.
It is best to explore on foot, as the narrow dirt roads, run in a confusinmg one way pattern and parking is nonexistant.
Stroll down to the lighthouse, which is now a hotel. There are also some small budget hotels in this area.

Bicycle

by RJ1967

If you are arriving by bus you can hire one of these bikes to transport your bags to your hotel. Also, they will transport your bags to the ferry that goes to Isla Cozumel.

These bikes can be flagged down all through town - on Isla Cozumel as well.

Las Mananitas

by Blatherwick about Las Mananitas

Good food for a good price. They serve a mix of Italian, Mexican and international dishes and are the best for breakfast. The staff is very good as well. I was just attracted to it initially by the Fleur-de-lis flag.

Swim like a fish!

by ScubaCat

What other activity could give a person such pleasure other than snorkeling? Scuba diving maybe, but for those of you who don't dive, snorkeling is the next best thing and Playa Del Carmen has plenty of areas to do that at. Xel ha or Xcaret has rivers, lagoons & bays for snorkeling and when you tire of that, there are all sorts of other neat things to do and see within these parks. Akumel is fantastic for snorkeling and when your tired you can go lay out on that spectacular white sand. The entrance fee for Akumel is only $5.00 and you can rent snorkel equipment & a locker right there next to the beach bar. I highly recommend Akumel. I've always seen some big amazing creatures when I've been there. Or you could go on any of the many tours given by the operators and be whisked over to Cozumel to do some fantastic snorkeling that you can only reach by boat. Snorkeling can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. Hey, if you want, you can even snorkel right off your hotel beach. We did & had a fantastic time!
