prices of food and drink

by btcpink

I have never been to mexico before and have been looking at all inclusive hotels. I am more the 'small character hotel' type of person though and like to go out and about in the evening. Can someone tell me how much I should expect to pay for an averae meal. Also what are the beer, vodka and cocktail prices like in the bars in playa. This will determine if I go to a central hotel or book one of the big all inclusives!
Cheers

In the top places expect the price to be very similar to home, maybe 20% less. There are other places that will be less money. Expect 20-90 pesos per drink depending on the quality of the place
5th Ave restaurants are more expensive than 10th and 15th Ave places

I find it is hard to beat the all inclusive package rates unless you get a last minute, big discount deal on air fare. You might want to consider an AI package at a less expensive hotel within easy walking distance to the streets/bus station/collectivo stand/ferry terminal. The best of everything is available including everyday culture yet you can still "drag" yourself back to an AI at night. Enjoy yourself what ever you decide.

Staying at an AI is definately a different experience. It's a good deal if you drink your money's worth. If you want to explore and try different restaurants I would stay in town. Playa has definately changed over the years and it's not a quite, small town. In the past, I was able to find small, nice hotels for around $50 USD, my last trip in March, I couldn't find anything under $100. Don't miss Dr. Taco, great food. If you want the small town experience try Cozumel, I have a great cheap hotel listed on my Cozumel page.

See my Puerto Morelos pages.
The village is located between Playa and Cancun airport. There is plenty of cheap hotels (as little as $40/night/2people) and restaurants with delicious food and character.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

More native animals

by Dabs

While strolling the grounds of our resort we saw an odd animal cross our paths, they looked sort of like large rats with a very small tail but they sat up on their hind legs like a squirrel when they were eating. They resort had a informational sign in German saying that they were agutis which I believe are agouti in English.

Agouti are about 16-25" long, weigh from 2 to 9 pounds. They are rodents with coarse black or brown hair, active during the day although we did see them in the early evening at the entrance to our resort. We also saw several of them in the garden area during the day and they seemed pretty harmless

And you can swim too

by whitneyone

Part of the guided tour of Sian Ka'an is swimming in the canals. you take these Mayan canals from one lagoon to another.
By now you know that we saw a crocodile.
then we stopped at the temple a couple of minutes later. Before we got back in the boat our guide told us we could swim. LOL. Hadn't we just seen a croc? He told us now that it was getting overcast the croc would stay in the reeds and we would be downstream.
I don't know why this all sounded so REASONABLE on vacation. So In we went.
You would not think there was a current, but there was...the guide turned off the motor and guided the boat right behind us with a pole, which i am sure doubles as a croc smacker...just in case.
It really was amazing until my nerves/better judgement got to me after about 10 minutes.

Here you got to go

by susu77 about Alux

Restaurant is made in amazing natural cave. Its quite big and you can also find a very romantic corner with sofa if you want. Our waitress was nice.He took us around the place and showed us some fossils and interesting shapes in the rocks. Its difficult to describe the place, you need to see it for yourself. Food was quite good but all four of us were sick the next day..Cant be sure if we got it from here but.. Atleast go there for a drink, you really need to see this place.

Bring your appetite

by RJ1967 about The Blue Lobster

We ate on the top balcony of the Blue Lobster. Good service and food selection. A man came around to the tables and made balloon animals for the kids. After dinner, everyone was given a free after dinner shot of liqueur. My favorite dish was the coconut shrimp. There was plenty!

Cenote/Cave Diving

by lindaeh

The area between Playa del Carmen and Tulum has some of the best cave/cavern diving in the world. Everyone should experience a "cenote" while visiting the Riviera Maya. If you are not a diver, I recommend a swim or a snorkle. Try Armando Elizalde of Scubacenote $85 USD for a double tank dive (lunch and equipment included). Best deal around and an excellent tour with an excellent guide.
