Hammocks
by travelnut723
Anyone out there have any suggestions on where is a good place to buy Hammocks in Playa?
Re: Hammocks
by LiamJackson10
If you go to 5th Ave the main shopping street, every other 3rd shop is selling hammacks and people on the side of the streets. I believe they was as cheap as $15 US. You have to haggle with these people though because they start there prices pretty high. I noticed you could get any colour really as well or patterns.
Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen
Puerto Aventuras: "Gringo Town"
by Kaspian
Puerto Aventuras describes itself as: "the only gated community resort on the Mexican Caribbean coast." Now, I don’t know exactly why you need to be "gated" in one of the most tourist-friendly areas of the world--it seems a little excessive. Some web sites and travel agencies say it is "in" Playa Del Carmen, which is wrong--it is about 35 minutes outside of town, halfway between Playa and Akumal. Puerto Aventuras is basically a very large oceanside retirement community for Americans and Germans (yep, the old WWII vets living side-by-side), which also hosts several lavish all-inclusive resorts, a marina, golf course, and some nice restaurants and shops. Don’t get me wrong, the setting is absolutely stunning, the grounds and roads are superbly well kept, and everybody is really happy. But this type of place (with gates) never make me feel safe but instead make me feel trapped inside. Locals have nicknamed Puerto Aventuras "Gringo Town" (gringo meaning white person) and say it is "very American." I agree. I had a great time staying on a resort here but I’d rather hang out with the locals, they’re generally nicer than the foreigners. You could literally live in Puerto Adventuras for years and not learn anything at all about Mexico.
Cenote/Cave Diving
by lindaeh
Cave Diving Mexico
The area between Playa del Carmen and Tulum has some of the best cave/cavern diving in the world. Everyone should experience a "cenote" while visiting the Riviera Maya. If you are not a diver, I recommend a swim or a snorkle. Try Armando Elizalde of Scubacenote $85 USD for a double tank dive (lunch and equipment included). Best deal around and an excellent tour with an excellent guide.
The Fire Dance!
by whitneyone about Blue Parrot Hotel
It was friday night and we had been walking every inch of 5th to see what was new. Walkin back on the beach we decided to stop for a cocktail and lay on one of the LOVELY lounges for two, on the beach in front of the Blue Parrot. After a while the lights dimmed and the fire dancing began! Wish my camera could have caught these people in action more clearly. It was amazing. Come as you are, baby!
Stop in!!! Great seafoods.
by RJ1967 about Pancho's Restaurant
Panchos has a beautiful bar and restaurant...complete with an indoor pool. The tables are candlelit and the waiters will flambe your desert right at your table. The menu has lobster, shrimp, or steaks cooked just the way you like them. After a great seafood dinner, we ordered the banana flambe. They fixed it at our table. It was so big that we shared two of them at our table and every bite disappeared. Super!
Jonesin' for a Burger?
by whitneyone about Lol Ha
The incredible food in Playa never lets you go hungry. But one day, we were just in the mood for something that screamed home. It was so bad that we even bought a hot dog at the Pemex station. One bite...bad move.
The we found what we craved at Lol Ha at Akumal Beach. These hamburgers were to DIE for. Stuffed with chilies and cheese and served with great fries. You may never crave a hamburger on vacation, but if you do, this is the place.
We went for lunch and stayed the whole afternoon. They make it easy as the huge palapa is right on the sand. Tables on the sand, and even chairs you can lounge in with a nice cold beer or pina colada. There was a storm threatening and at times, appearing, so we'd all just grab our plates, take them to the bar...wait 5 minutes for the sun, and resume postions on the sand.
