Beautiful Coast/Beach
by darthmilmo
Playa del Carmen has one of the most beautiful beach/coast I have ever seen (and believe me, I’ve seen many in my time). The water is so warm and clear, yet the sand remains so cool and clean. It's amazing that such a paradise can exist on this rock, Earth.
For you Golf Nuts
by ScubaCat
For those of you that stay in Playa Del Carmen or any of the many resorts between there and Tulum, there a place for you golfers. Not only is this a championship course in the world, but where else can you play golf and loose your ball in the jungles of Mayan ruins. The course and it's clubhouse is in it's own right a beautiful addition to the many charms of the Mayan Rivera. The clubhouse structure was constructed to stay right in theme with things with a palpa roof and houses not only lockers for the golfers but a pro shop and plenty of storage for those who need to store their clubs for the week. For those of you who choose not to bring their clubs and I say why bother, this clubhouse rents top of the line clubs such as Calaway and Taylor Made for 1/2 the normal price you would pay at your hometown course and they have clubs for both right hand and left hand players. The price of a round of golf is also 1/2 the price you would normally pay for in the states and you get the joy of playing in a unique mexican setting. What else could the golfer nut in you ask for? No need to bring a thing, they rent it all. Calaway, TalorMade golf clubs, carts, golves, shoes, etc. Just show up and play the round of your life!
We weren't looking for...
by DellyM
We weren't looking for nightlife, ours consisted of eating a late dinner with a couple of drinks then back to our room to watch TV. We did have one very late night which we spent in the company of a very interesting restaurant owner, but that's another story! If you're looking for late night shopping and nightclubs then I would say that Playa del Carmen or Cancun would be a better choice of location.

We didn't venture out of the resort at meal times, as there are quite a few restaurants to choose from. Our favourites were Richard's and the Ole Cafe International. However, Richard's place was up for sale at the time we were there, so the standards could change along with a change of management should the sale go ahead.
The restaurants in this area are all around the dolphin enclosure, it was really unusual to eat our meal with the blowing of the dolphins in the background. If you take lunch here (it's too dark to see anything in the evenings) you can watch the daily troups of people enjoying their very expensive 'dolphin encounter'. Fine if you don't mind these beautiful creatures being taken from the wild to entertain the tourists for a tall fee. Fave menu item at Richard's was the pizza. We shared a 'large' pizza - toppings we chose were mushroom, olive, tomato and onion. It was extremely tasty and absolutely huge. We struggled to get through it, but we managed, it tasted so good we had to carry on eating even when we got full!
Fave menu item at Cafe Ole was the vegetarian enchiladas with refried beans and guacamale, we also found the staff here to be extremely friendly and courteous.
In search of shrimp tacos
by Dabs about Dr. Taco
Last visit December 2005, was still open in December 2006 but we didn't have a chance to stop in
We didn't see our first choice for shrimp tacos, La Floresta, as we were driving down the highway (not sure it's still there) and our second choice, El Oasis, which was recommended on the playadelcarmeninfo.com website was closed for renovation so we asked the guys at the Policia stand on 5th Avenue where to go and they sent us to Dr. Taco.
Dr. Taco is a hip open air eatery, with reggae music playing, frequented by some pretty funky looking folks. There are a few booths to sit at and also a bar area next to the grill which is where we sat to watch our food being prepared.
On our second visit, the doctor/owner was in the house helping to serve up and prepare the food. According to the playadelcarmeninfo.com website Dr. Taco really is a doctor who came from Guadalajara where he ran a medical clinic.
Here's a review with some more pictures
http://www.playamayanews.com/article254.html Shrimp tacos were made with breaded and deep fried shrimp with a large array of sauces and salsas to put on them. The staff warned us away from the really hot sauces on both visits. An order of 3 shrimp tacos was 33 pesos (about $3US) and was pretty darn tasty. On the second visit I also tried the calamari taco but preferred the shrimp tacos.
December 2005 update-we stopped here again on our recent trip and the shrimp tacos are still yummy! We also tried a chicken quesadilla which was very tasty.
