I have to say, that we really liked our room (#402). It was bright, spacious, on the first floor and had a terrace overlooking the gardens.
It had two double beds pushed together - so it was huge!
Cable TV including CNN FOX BBC in English.
In-Room Safe - no charge
Tiled Shower stall with squeeze-bottle shampoo
Iron and Ironing board
Hair Dryer
Mini - Fridge, stocked with cans of soda, cans of beer and bottles of water.

Update November, 2014
This time we had room #2801 with a great location near the Lupita Restaurant where the lunch buffet was located.

November 24 to December 1, 2012
Hans and I always like to get away to somewhere sunny and warm, the end of November or beginning of December. I started my research in October and we both decided on Playa Del Carmen in Mexico. After checking out a few resorts, we decided on the All-Inclusive RIU TEQUILA as it had some really good reviews and it was not that far from the town of Playa del Carmen.
We booked through Apple Vacations and flew out of Detroit Michigan directly to Cancun (3 1/2 hour flight). A shuttle drove us from the airport to the RIU (45 minutes).
The Resort is All-Inclusive - All Meals - unlimited drinks - daily snacks - nightly entertainment .
Four Restaurants - La Lupita (Steakhouse & Lunch Buffet )- Jalisco (Breakfast & Dinner Buffet) - Bamboo (Asian) - Beach Club (Mexicano).- Reservations required - Dress Code Applies.
Four Bars - Swim-up Bar - Sports Bar - Maguey Bar Salon - El Kiosko Bar Plaza.
Two Swimming Pools, including a children's Pool.
As the Resort is not right on the beach, there is a beach shuttle to and from the Hotel.
Exchange privileges with RIU Yucatan and RIU Playacar.
Free WiFi in the Lobby, but access is limited to 90 minutes once every 24 hour period.

Check-In for you hotel room is generally 3:00 p.m. Since we arrived at RIU Tequila around noon, We packed a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirt and towel in our carry-on and changed in the rest rooms near the Lobby. Check-out time is generally 11:00 a.m. If your flight is later in the afternoon, just leave your luggage in the Lobby Area. Do not however leave carry-ons with valuables inside.

Update" November 18 to 25, 2014
We again went to the RIU TEQUILA. This time we booked thru Signature Vacations and flew out of Toronto. Total package price - flight - room - meals - drinks - entertainment - $1974.00 Canadian. We again enjoyed our time there and some of the activities team even remembered us, especialy "Santa Hansi".

4th stay December 2014

We've stayed at the Riu Tequila four times and I wouldn't hesitate to come here again, it's slightly cheaper to stay off the beach but hardly inconvenient as it's just a short walk away. The Riu Tequila is one of 6 Riu resorts in Playacar and we had access to two of the Riu hotels that did have beach front property, the Riu Yucatan and the Riu Playacar, and also the Riu Lupita which is built overlooking a golf course. We did not have access to the two higher class Riu Palace resorts.

The Riu resorts are some of the resorts that are furthest from Playa del Carmen, it took us about 25-30 minutes to walk to the edge of town at a moderate pace. The clientele mostly European, lots of German and British guests, also lots of Canadians, it seems to be very popular with package tours from those countries. Many of the European women sunbathed and walked the beach topless. The resort appears to be family friendly, we saw plenty of kids but not so many that they were annoying. Of course over the Christmas holidays there are probably more.

Our room didn't have much of a view but it was very nice, two comfortable queen size beds pushed together. There's an in room safe, ironing board, a small refrigerator, mini bar with water and soda and 4 bottles of alcohol set up tap style, TV with several cable channels. There's air conditioning and an overhead fan.

The shower had great water pressure and always had hot water. Toiletries were minimal, shampoo/bath gel from a wall dispenser and bar soap. The towels fine but not fluffy.

You get 90 minutes of consecutive free wifi in the lobby, if you bring two devices, you still only get 90 consecutive minutes but you can both use it at the same time. That's really my only complaint, while I didn't use it for 90 minutes on any of the days, I would have liked to be able to check in multiple times during the day if I needed to.

Unique Quality: There are three reservation restaurants, a steakhouse, Asian and Mexican, we only ate at the steakhouse on the 1st visit which was good but a bit slow, we didn't bother with the reservation restaurants on any of the subsequent visits. The buffet restaurant was really good for all three meals, breakfast with made to order omelets and Mexican food if you can handle quesadillas and empanadas for breakfast. There was also French toast, pancakes, breakfast meat, fruit, cereal, pastries, juice, coffee. Lunch and dinner were also quite good, we never felt the need to head into town for supplementary food like most resorts. Lots of Mexican dishes which is mostly what I ate but always good quality meat and seafood. And I couldn't resist the yummy coconut ice cream for dessert or the guacamole at lunch. You can also eat at the Beach Club near the beach which always seemed to have a better lunch than the Tequila.

The hotel has two pools, one with a swim up bar. The jacuzzi was attached to the pool and hence cool water, the only disappointment of the resort. The beach club was a short 5 minute walk across the street or if you are extremely into vacation mode, there's a golf cart shuttle every few minutes. Plenty of lounge chairs, lots of sun and shade under palapas and palm trees, nice beach and access to breakfast, lunch and beverages at the other Rius plus you can use their pools.

Non motorized water sports are included and motorized sports and snorkel trips were extra.

Riu Tequila - a real gem

We just got back from 2 glorious wks. from Mar 17 to 31, 2007. The resort is beautifully planted, lots of lush vegetation. The service was fantastic & the food choice was varied. The rooms are a nice size, with the 2nd flr rooms having cathedral ceilings. The balconies are a good size & a drying rack on them. The short walk down to the beach only took us 6 minutes at a leisurely pace, the whole time sheltered under arbors. The tram only takes a couple of minutes & is on a load and go system, rotating 2 trams. There is a nice shopping area just a 2 minute walk to the left as you leave the resort - the Plaza Playacar. It has a nice selection of stores & there are a few on the Mexican Street over at the Yucatan. The walk into town only took 25 minutes again at a leisurely pace, or you can grab a cab at the hotel main entrance for just $5.00US each way. Where they drop you off, for the return trip you will find lots of drivers across the street waiting for you. The shopping in Playa del Carmen and in Cozumel is fantastic. The vendors are not too bad. There seems to be a jewelry store at every turn and their prices seem good - don't forget to barter for everything at these stores. The tours offered by our tour operator can be had more cheaply by going in town to Sergio's or at the GrayLine kiosk at the Plaza Playacar - ask for Angel there.
On the whole, we have always liked where we have vacationed and have made the best of our time and taken advantage of what the various areas have had to offer. This was no exception here. We took the ferry to Cozumel, toured Chichen Itza, Tulum, Xel Ha, Coba, Xcaret and enjoyed them all. We have liked other places in the past, but not to the extent we would return to the same resort, if we returned to the same destination. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Riu Tequila and for the first time have said it is a resort we would go back to. This resort gets our recommendation.

Lovely all inclusive hotel

The Riu Tequila is an all inclusive hotel, located in Playacar, five minutes from Playa Del Carmen, along with it?s sister hotels, the Riu Yucatan and the Riu Playacar. It is a beautiful hotel with excellent pool, a buffet with such a large choice - The choice of food changes daily so you are never bored and you have a plateful before you have even seen half of what's on offer!
It is about 5 minutes walk to the beach, which was fine, however, we spent most of the time by the pool as there was no shade on the beach. It can be difficult to get a shaded spot if you come any later than 9am though. The swim up bar was excellent, if a bit crowded midday, but the whole pool area was never too crowded to ruin your enjoyment. If you have children, there is certainly a lot going on to keep them entertained, both during the day and early evening.
There is a different show every night - eg Michael Jackson, Grease, Mexican night, Moulin Rouge, the only draw back was that as we were on the later dinner seating (9pm-10.30pm) we had difficulty in finding a seat at the show.
All in all, I would thoroughly recommend it here.

The facilities were first class. They could use an extra pool or two plus a couple hot-tubs for late night soaking. Food is always good with great variety. Staff are superb. Clean rooms regularly stocked with assortment of beverages; yes beer! Drinks are good and you don't have to wait 30 minutes to get one. Could use an extra 30 lounges. You either have to walk or take the shuttle to the beach, but that only takes 5-10 minutes. Evening shows were quite good; better than most we have seen at other resorts. They make a mean Mojito here, lots of fresh mint. I highly recommend this hotel.

Unique Quality: Extraordinary buffet with lots of local cuisine. Staff are top notch, rooms are nice, although they don't really have a view except to, well outside; duh! Nice stone pathways which lead you around the compound.

Directions: South of Cancun. Directly across from Cozumel.

Clubhotel Riu Tequila is situated in Playa del carmen and surrounded by lush tropical landscaping, this comfortable resort offers everything, from live entertainment to an array of sports. A place to relax and enjoy your most active vacation, for young and old, children and adults. What I found most amazing at Riu Tequila was the ambience, so very relaxing. Ofcourse the staff was fantastic. You'd only had to snap your finger and they were ready to help you with anything. I also have to compliment the entertainers. They didn't just made sure we had a great time during the day with various sports and activities, they also put up a spectacular show every night.

Unique Quality: Riu Tequila has a great pool, which includes a poolbar. The rooms are very large with (i by the way found very good and unusual) a toilet separate from the bathroom). All rooms have a fantanstic tropical garden view. Riu Tequila has 3 restaurants, one main restaurant, one ala carte, which also serves as a lunch restaurant and one beach restaurant. Naturally the food in the restaurants were excellent, that goes for breakfast, lunch and diner!!
