getting a cab/collectivo from yalku?
by crystalandb
I want to go to yalku from my resort and wiil take either a taxi or collectivo but after yalku i want to go to akumal and i'm wondering if it is easy to catch the collectivo or a phone or place to get a taxi?

You will be able to use the colectivo on the highway only. It will drop you at the entrance to Akumal. From there, you can walk all the way to Yalku, but I am betting you would not want to do that with all your snorkeling gear. It would take you maybe 45 minutes.
Another option is to take the colectivo and just walk 5 minutes into Akumal where the taxis are parked and hire one to take you to the lagoon.
Please only use biodegradable sunscreen in the lagoon and any time you snorkel near coral. http://www.mexitanproducts.com/biodegradablesunscreen.html

When we did it, the colectivo dropped us on the highway, there were a couple of taxis sitting there and we took one to Yalku. When we were done we asked the people running it and I believe they called us a taxi to take us to Akumal for lunch and from there we took a colectivo back. It was a long way from the highway to Yalku, I wouldn't recommend trying to walk it
Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen
move away from the ferry :)
by peggydaly
while i stayed at a lovely place a few blocks from the bus station and a few more from the ferry, most of the nicer places are at least 10 blocks north of the ferry on avenida 5 (5th ave). playa is by no means the rugged yucatan, but it has lovely beaches and no highrise resorts. if you move east, away from ave 5, you can find great cheap food. i felt safe the entire time.
BarrieReef, Cozumel and Cenotes!
by diver-x
We did three dive excursions on our trip to Playa del Carmen: First a trip to Cozumel, then a cenote dive and finally a day on the barrier reef, near Playa del Carmen.
We dove Santa Rosa wall in Cozumel and it was pleasant enough but saw nothing much remarkable except there was a lot of sand on the reef even down deep. We dove with Studio Blue and had to take the 8:00 ferry over to Cozumel from PDC and haul our stuff along too.
The cenote excursion, on the other hand, was quite remarkable. A cenote is a cavern with an underground river flowing through it. There are cenotes all over the Yucatan peninsula. Cenote diving isn't cave diving. There is always sunlight in view and an exit is always a minute away or closer. You must dive with with a cave-certified guide and groups are limited to 4. The sunlight and the cave formations are so beautiful there are no words to describe. You have to see for yourself! We dove the Dos Ojos cenote with GoCenotes and were very happy with our guide.
Our last excursion was the barrier reef off of PDC. Our dives on the barrier reef were on par with Cozumel. All diving in the area is drift diving because the current is wicked! Our dive master found some tunnels for us to swim through and I had a turtle swim right up to me to check me out! Lots of fish and the coral formations were OK. Our barrier reef dives were with Phantom Divers and though we were happy with our dive master, the boat had not a stitch of shade! Luckily we had SPF50 sunblock so it wasn't a problem. I usually dive in the Caribbean with a 1 mil full suit, mainly to protect against scrapes and jellyfish. You could probably dive with no neoprene at all but I like to have the protection.
In the cenote, I wore a full 3 mil jump suit and was glad I did. The water is much cooler in the caverns - probably high 60's to low 70's.
Just outrageous!
by whitneyone about Alux
In the center of town, wast of 5th street, you have to ask someone how to get to Alux. which is across the 307
Alux (pronounced Ah-loosh) is a bar/restaurant/nightclub that is built inside of a Cenote (cave). Next door to it is something like an auto parts store or a laundry mat or somthing...but when you enter you go down a set of stone stairs and all of a sudden you are in a CAVE!! Not a small cave...a huge rambling underground cave filled with nooks and crannies and water and stalagmites They serve dinner, but we didn't eat there. We were treated to good drinks and a wonderful musical group which played a mix of music. Imagine Guatamalan music with the additon of a violin!! I think they were "the mission", but since it was all in spanish, i found it hard to keep up!
There was also a belly dancer who got the audience into it!
Even if there had been NO entertainment it would have been worth the trip. Excuse the amount of skin in this photo...it's really all about Alux..there is an entire legend that goes with the name and the Alux, and they can tell you about it...even in English! You can dress however you'd like, but I would say the word of the day is always Casual when in Mexico.
So good !!!
by mcrestincov about Frida Restaurant
If you stay all day in Playa del Carmen , when the sun goes down take a tour for the street behind the beach.
There is a lot of restaurantes, shops and amazing places to eat or buy something.
In the end of the street ask for the Frida restaurant, it is so beatfull and the food so nice ! Go there and mail me after !

by Dabs about El Cuerno de Oro
We stopped by here twice and although we could not read the menu, the waiter brought us everything we asked for including shrimp tacos (not breaded and small), quesadillas con chorizo and chicken tacos.
The waiter was extraordinarily nice and we enjoyed our al fresco dining here. The quesadillas con chorizo were quite tasty (tortilla with melted cheese and spicy sausage). The shrimp tacos were tasty but not as good as the ones from La Floresta. Our total bill was less than 100 pesos on the first visit and 70 pesos on the second visit.
