Great little Resort close to Playa Del Carmen

We had a great time at the Grand Coco Bay Resort. We enjoyed the approximately 3 mile walk to 5th avenue in Playa Del Carmen. The rooms were very comfortable, close to the beach and the food was great. We enjoyed walking on the beach where our friends almost always took a cab to Playa ($3.50 US each way) 5th Avenue is very commercialized but if you walk back to 8th - 10th street you will find the resturants the natives eat at. The price's and food is definetly better away from the tourism area. There is a reef a short distance out in the ocean just in front of the resort that keeps the water a little calmer on the beach but the water isn't as clear as that found on 7 mile beach in Negril, Jamacia. Due to the reef and calm waters there are alot of boats docked right in front of the Grand Coco Bay resort but this doesn't in anyway bother the swimmers. All in all we had a great time and I would recommend this resort.

Unique Quality: A person can pick anything to death and we did have a few problems but they were all given attention and fixed. Our television didn't work very well and they fixed it. Our toilet was plugged one day and again they were quick to fix this. The thing I liked is the staff watch's for you to return to your room before they come in to work on anything or check anything - they don't just enter your room and fix something without you being there. This gave me a feeling of security and safety for our personal things in the room. The pool is great and the swim-up bar was busy - the bartender at the swim-up bar (Ricardo) doesn't smile much but we did get him to smile a few times. Service was great and the drinks were good. Basically any room in the resort gives you a view of the ocean so don't waste your money of an ocean view room ($25.00 US additional per night) I guess my only complaint was they didn't have coffee in the lounge, in the mornings. You had to walk to the resturant for coffee so be sure to take some big cups with you, if you need your morning coffee. They did set-up and have coffee in the lounge, in the evenings.

holiday of our dreams

We have just come back from the holiday of our dreams a two week all inclusive stay at the Reef Coco Beach in Playa del Carmen. Hardworking, energetic and friendly staff helped to make this hotel very welcoming. As an example, our daughter had her 8th birthday at the resort and what began as an email inquiry from our home to Lisette at the hotel resulted in a beautiful cake and piƱata all put on by the Reef Hotel and hosted in the kids club. It was a delightful event! Two staff who showed their amazing abilities with children were Jimena and Melina. It would be nice if there was a more organized schedule of activities at the kids club around the hotel and (on the beach). We had a nice big room on the fourth floor facing the central pool area (as most rooms do) was a treat to look out from. The very best part of the Reef Coco Beach is the beach!!! The beach front is great, white sand, glorious turquoise water, beach chairs, even a reef in front of the hotel to snorkel at. The undeveloped stretch of beach extending north from the hotel is beautiful and nearly empty and just beckons a stroll. For greater variety of fish and reef we took a number of out trips to Xel-Ha and Yal-Yu and Akmal Bay, which were all amazing places with fabulous snorkeling and worth the time away from the hotel. Use the collectivos for transport and save a fortune. All three of us were delighted with the food choices, and the variety that the buffet offered. Our Eight year old loved the dessert options in particular while we really enjoyed the fruit and seafood choices. Drinks were good and were served any way you requested them. There was enough variety that we only ate out about 4 meals in the whole two weeks. We also enjoyed one dinner each at the Mexican and Italian restaurants at the Reef.We visited several other resorts and with each visit counted our blessings that we were not in some sprawling complex that more resembled a university campus than a Mexican resort. If you are expecting top notch, 5 star cruise ship luxury in an environment festooned with dripping ice sculptures and decadent oppulance, you will not find it here. But, if you want great value for you money, good quality accomodations in a smaller intimate setting and one of the beast beaches on the Mexican Riviera, then the Reef Coco Beach is definately for you.

fantastic resort!!!!

We just spent 1 week, 12-27--1-03, at The Reef Coco Beach and loved it!
This is an annual trip for us-12 people. We have stayed at many of the all inclusives in the Mayan Riveria and found Coco Beach fantastic!!!
We laughed all week about the reviews we read prior to leaving! The staff was wonderful, the food was great, the beach and pool area were supurb.. We loved the "real" drinks at the bars-a change of pace from most resorts. The only thing we could even come close to having a problem with was the temp. of the pool-big deal! If you are planning a trip to Coco Beach, please disregard the whining, complaining reviews-some people are never happy!

Super Time

My children and I have just returned from a weeks vacation at The Reef Coco Beach Resort. We were there from December 19 to December 26. I couldn't wait to get home to write this review. For the past month, I was so worried because of the negative reviews I was reading. I don't think these people were at the same resort. We had a fabulous time. My daughter is 15 and my son is 91/2 years of age. This is the fifth all inclusive we have taken, and it was the best so far. The food was very good. Not great, but good. There was never a problem finding more than enough to eat. Breakfast was always enjoyable. Omlettes made to order, fresh fruit and rolls, cereal, yogurt and many other things. We usually ate lunch poolside. Burgers, pizza, bbq. chicken and more. The buffet had hot and cold with fresh pasta everyday. Dinner at the buffet was just fine and the 2 sit down restaurants were very good. The pool was a wee bit cold, but very beautiful and big. Every room faces the pool, which made going to your room very easy. No complaints about the rooms. Good size, nice bathrooms, good A/C. When we arrived, I upgraded our room to have a beach view. The front desk was very co-operative. The staff were all very friendly and tried to always be courteous. The animation team were fantastic. There job is to entertain the guests and they did a marvelous job. We took several e-mail addresses from them and will surely keep in touch. The beach was very nice and the water was great. Since the hotel only has about 200 rooms, there was never a problem getting chairs to lie on and I always felt as if we were in an intimate place. The town of Playa Del Carman is only a 20 minute walk from the hotel and was alot of fun. One day we took a ferry ride to Cozuomel and had a great time there. I'm going back next year for sure. The people who wrote about the club being awful probably can't be pleased even if they stayed at a Four Seasons. Just like the movie critics, don't believe everything you read. See for yourself, you won't be sorry. Happy New Year to one and all, and have a great time at the RCC.Regards, Marty

An amazing time

Just returning from Reef Coco Beach Dec 15-22 and reviewed some of the recent comments that had been posted. Who are these people? Firstly, I believe a trip is what you make it. We had a truly amazing vacation at this resort. FOOD The buffet was always good (one cannot expect french cuisine at a buffet to begin with) and the staff, super-friendly. We preferred the buffet to the main restaurants. SAFETY In terms of safety, we left our safe wide open one day and returned to find our wad of cash safely in it's resting place. Tipping the cleaning staff guarantees you that little extra. WEATHER We had beautiful weather with the exception of one overcast day, which gave us the opportunity to walk to the very nearby, Playa del Carmen. A little breezy at night so remember a few light jumpers or wraps. ROOMS All have a partial view of the ocean. Our view was great and being on the side of the hotel without the restaurants was preferable. BEACH Beach was stunning and very clean. Booked chairs early every morning. OCEAN Brilliant blue and very, very warm. Soft sand floor. Unfortunately, not too much to see when snorkelling in the ocean in front of the hotel. Many boats just past the "roped off area" allow for scenic photos but are said to be dangerous when trying to snorkel. POOL Clean but too cold to swim or sit at the pool-bar. LOCATION While some complain that the hotel has less than perfect surroundings, I thought that part of the charm was having a real piece of Mexico just outside the hotel. But then again that's just perspective... SERVICE My shower was leaking one evening and after a quick phone-call, someone was sent up and fixed the problem immediately. DRINKS The house red wine had a bit of a funky, chemical taste the first few days and was only drinkable after that. We stuck with white wine and spritzers. However, never a long wait for drinks and they were always good. ENTERTAINMENT Awesome, even if aimed more for families. We enjoyed it thoroughly and only landed up exploring the Mexican night-life once.

Only a disco and warm-water jacuzzi tub were missing!

A hotel to send your ex's tooooo!

Where to begin!?! This was our 10th trip to Mexico and we have stayed at numerous hotels ranging in ratings from 3.5 to 5 stars. This hotel was by far the worst hotel we have ever stayed in, in Mexico. We returnd Dec.27 and would definately not return nor recomend it to anyone. We were there for two weeks and did see slight improvement.

Good Points: - The italian restuarant was excellent, great service. - Good quality food at the snack bar with the best variaty we have seen in a resort (the service was slow). - The waiters working in the morning for the buffet breakfeat were excellent (Second week only)

Bad Points: - The rooms are small with many plumbing problems - We switched rooms 4 times due to issues and none of them had a balcony door that would lock. - No ownership or will to resolve issues at the front desk, had to keep on them to resolve issues or to get our point accross. - rude hotel phone operators - Cold food in the buffet and not a good variety - There would be one bartender working at each bar, would have to wait for a drink and the bars closed earlier than indicated. - No internet, no tennis courts, no coffee makers in the room ect. . . - They did have qualitly liquors like bailys ect. . . but there would be only one bottel per night at each bar, so if we were not there when the bar opend sorry out of luck. - Lobby store sold products that were expried before the hotel even opened. - We inhaled a lot of chemicals from the insect spraying, which was done right outside our door (no notice given to guests that this was being done) - We went out to eat more times then we did in the hotel. We found a great Italian restaurant down the road, best pizza and pasta. Two people can eat theire for 200 pesos including drinks. Also they have internet at this restaurant. (Great coffee) - We were their over Christmas, we booked a tour through our Sunquest rep. on Christmas day we waited in the lobby for two hours and no one came to pick us up! They do not even call to let you know. We have traveled with world of vacations and air transat vacations with no problems and their hotels and tours they recommend were great. -Disappointed in the hotel, did not do much for Christmas unless you were 10 or under. -Lots of kids, which is not a problem but the hotel brochure does not indicate there being a kids club. - Keep all items in the safe as the maid removed an item which had imoportant identification information on it. I ran up to the room to change and she had this paper on the cart.

All in all we spent most of our time waiting in the lobby of the hotel, either waiting for tours that did not come, complaining or trying to get things done.

We would not recommend this hotel, Sunquest or Skyservice Airlines (you have to pay for pop! and the weight scam they run all other airlies allow 22 Kg and Skyservice only allows 20 kg and they ding you $'s)

Give this one about 5 years to improve

Have just returned from two weeks { 28Nov.-12 Dec.}at this resort and were not at all impressed.SUNQUEST [our tour company] had rated this a 5 Star Exclusive, we can only assume that they have lowered their standards as this was at BEST a 3 Star, this according to a LOT of people we talked to.The first night we got a room that was very nice except that around 1900 a compressor or whatever came on and cycled very loudly every minute or so, at 0620 some thing happened and it shut off, needless to say NO sleep this night {Friday}.A complaint to the front desk with Sunquest rep. did nothing, we were offered another room on Monday,no way, had to stay another night with no sleep but Sunday we got a new room, right over the lobby bar which stays open until 0200 every night and does get a little noisy to say the least. Revenge or what !!!!!!. I could go on and on but won't enough to say the food in the main restaurant is terrible, a few examples, CANNED fruit and watered down concentrate fruit juice IN MEXICO??????? Every breakfast and lunch was the same, NO variety, empty food trays, cold and basically NOT A 5 STAR. The 2 speciality restaurants are also nothing to write home about. Eat if you can all meals at the little poolside snack bar, it is great. The beach is to die for and the young people who provide the entertainment are TERRIFIC.Could be a good place in the future but if you can choose somewhere else. There are enough GOOD places in the same area without wasting money on something this BAD.

Excellent Two Weeks

by A TripAdvisor Member

We just returned today from two great weeks at the RCB. This is our second trip to the Mayan Riviera this year - stayed at the Palladium in March. We really like the size of the resort compared to the larger resorts. It only took a few minutes to go from the beach to your room to the restaurants. If you forgot something, it was a quick trip to get it. There was also no problem getting beach chairs, something that was a real problem at the Paladium. Surprised that some have mentioned no tennis court - it is on the roof above the theatre... there is also a basketball court there. Staff were excellent. Expecially Melina for the miniclub and Ana at the fitness center. Beach is excellent with beautiful sand. We took boogie boards out virtually every day to surf the waves (go about five to ten minutes either side to get the best surf). Food varied. When it was good it was fantasitic. They do some great fajitas and shrimp; very fresh. The snack bar was also excellent, much better than the Palladium. Was also surprised that they did not charge us for the use of the electronic safe (we used them in each of our two rooms). Also they supplied a cot for our third child for no charge. It was somewhat difficult to get but after a bit of asking, got it for the fourth night. They did a really excellent job at both Christmas (Nativity play on the beach) and at New Years (Fantastic party, food and show). I'd give it an excellent rating, but there are still a few areas that they need to improved upon - mainly consistency of the food with a few of the buffets being disappointing. But overall an excellent vacation spot and would certainly consider returning.

Second time been in Mexico. At the RCB week 28 november to december 12 2003. Everything was fine exept " mexican problem" . We loose water for a night...Not enough beach towel for everywone for a small 30 minutes in the morning for one day...Two kind of Game at the beach , volleyball and petanque. The pool is very cold... Security box in the room extra-expensive ( 3 usd /day ) . Extra high quality food for these two week but becoming a lot cheeper in the end of the second weeks. Inside night show and no club. Only a small poolbar. But I eat 7 inches scampies for a 14 days 1800 canadian dollars travel , I cannot be disapointed!
