Where to stay in Playa del Carmen (non U.S. style resort)

by tmschmid

Hi,

I am planning a romantic 4th of July weekend in Playa del Carmen. I do not want to stay at a US style resort. Am interested in a nice to very nice but quaint hotel/B&B type place in town. Looking for quality/service. On 5th or between 5th and beach. Does anyone have any suggestions? Not interested in all inclusive. Too much good food and drink all over town to be limited to mediocre resort food. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks!

Take a look here at some of my recommendations.
These reviews are a couple of years old, but I'd suspect most are still there.

The best 4th of July I ever had was in Playa del Carmen. I was living there, but if I were going to stay in a hotel, the Blue Parrot would be it. You can find them online. It's right on the beach and is "the place" to be at night. There is a nightly firedancing show that really rocks, and the hotel is central to everything. On the 4th just walk down the beach to your right (if you're facing the water) and there is a bar a little ways down that has a 4th of July BBQ. The food is great and cheap and the place is run by Americans, so if you want to celebrate the 4th there, that's the place to go. Make sure you hit Xaret and swim with the dolphins!!! For a cheaper hotel, try the dolphin (el delfin) it's on 5th and can be as cheap as $40/night.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

High factor sun cream

by LiamJackson10

I adivse any one who burns alot or easier takes a high sun cream. The first day i would a good make 50 and i still burn't. I ended up buying a good american brand 70 which seemed to work better for me. But when swimming in the water i used a rash vest to help stop burning.

Refined Partying

by ScubaCat about Perico's & CongoBongo

While partying in Playa Del Carmen can be a blast, close to your hotel (don't have to stubble so far) & has a more relaxed atmosphere than Cancun. You should try the wild side in Cancun. Go ahead & make a night of it, since the trip into Cancun is 45 minutes. Forget the cab, for that length of ride to & from can run you $60+, rent that limo & your own personal driver for $100.00 bucks for the night. Your driver will take care of your every want & need from driving you all over town to making sure you have the best table in the club. We had Winnie take us to Perico's first for our dining experience. Of course dinner is not the only item Perico's serves up, there's flaming drinks, tequila congo lines & dancing with the wait staff. The resturant itself is a work of art. Please don't just sit at the table, but wander around..the pictures that follow show you what you might find around the corner or in your bathroom. From there Winnie took us to Congo Bongo. Man, that was a happening place with Zorro flying through the air, beetlejuice & other unique characters performing their acts. If you like loud music, dancing your feet off & having tequila poured down your throat while dancing on the bar, then this is your kind of place! We had a blast, so much so that I don't have any pictures. CongoBongo stays open into the wee hours of the morning, but alas the couple we were with wanted to go get Hurricane's. So off we went to Pat O'Brien's. After being there for a couple of hours with 2 drunk gentlemen, us wives decided it was time to take the fellows home. Unfortunately we didn't make it home in the 45 minutes it takes to return. Winnie had to stop by the side of the road a couple of times to let the boys let go of their dinner. But it was such a memorable night, it's funny to look back at on, especially the tale of the drunk hubby who kept wondering when the road would quit weveing back & forth. Since you'll be going into Cancun, they tend to dress up a bit more than Playa Del Carmen. I recommened slacks for the guys & sundress or at the minimum nice shorts for the girls. Some women go way out & have the dresses, heels & full makeup.

The best breakfast

by Maria_75 about Las Mañanitas

This is an italian restaurant, but they serve a mix of italian, mexican and international dishes. They always have good offers, and the food is delicious. Their breakfast menu is large and varied, you can have everything from a croissant and coffee to a full american breakfast. And of course, traditional mexican breakfasts. The prices are quite good and the staff is very nice.

Fresh Fruit Snacks

by Kaspian about Mayan Fruit Vendors

For only 10 pesos ($1 USD) a cup, the women in traditional Mayan dresses working in the main square of Playa Del Carmen will sell you a large cup of fresh fruit. It doesn't look like much, but it's filling enough to be a meal in itself. The fruit is fresh, juicy, and tastes fantastic. Almost a half of pineapple in one glass! The coconut tasted sweet too--without a hint of soapiness. Pineapple, papaya, coconut, mango, and watermelon.

Xcaret- No Disney Here

by PrunedInWA

This is not so much a "theme park" I would say as it is a nature preserve. Lots of bizarre animals in natural settings, not caged, but contained. Creatively.

For $80US in 1999 I swam with dolphins. This is not Hawaii where you have goggles and you tell them to do tricks and watch underwater, this is 3 dolphins to every human, 20 minutes just hanging out in the pool with them, surrounded ! Touching them, kissing them, talking to them, whatever you like. Plus!!! You line up and they all jump over you...AND at the end of your little visit, you lay on your stomach with your arms in the air and all of the sudden, there are 2 noses tickling the arches of your feet. Then, off you go, at dolphin speed, flying through the air (well, half air, half water) like Superman! A fabulous end to a fabulous visit with some fabulous creatures.

They have GREAT "froofy" drinks at the cabana bar and surprisingly bountiful snorkeling as well.

There are hammocks along the ocean to relax in when you need a break, and..... well, I could keep going, but you wouldn't have any surprises, so, go. Enjoy.
