This hostel is walking distance to the touristy pedestrian-only 5th Avenue, the various collectivos stops, and the bus terminal. Wal-mart is just across the street.
What I like about Hostel Playa is: it is CLEAN, has good shower stalls with strong water pressure, good kitchen facilities, and one of very few hostels where the women's rooms are located separate from the other areas.
Unique Quality: If the owner (Mario?) is around, he'll likely ask you to join his little group for some tequila. Trouble is, the chatting goes on till late night and the noise keeps the guests awake.
It's one of the biggest hostel I've ever stayed at ... it has great facilities, an a great vibe... the way a hostel should always be.
You have a kitchen you can use... a recreation area with TV and DVD... hammocks all over... a BBQ area... you can also get to the roof to hang out when everybody is sleeping... it's a pretty cool place!
Directions: It's across the street from Wal-Mart ... four blocks from the beach.
Not a bad place, but not great. Rooms are clean and comfortable, there are treats and beer in minibar free of charge and the food was good. Also, staying on the beach was great. On the down side the walls are thin. If you want to sleep in while on vacation, this is not the place for you. The staff was friendly, but not terrific. I've seen better in Playa Del Carmen.
Overall not a bad experience, but not memorable.
Unique Quality: Pool, ocean view, clean rooms, treats in mini-bar, no charge.
Directions: On PDC beach.
