Finding a place to stay in Playa Del Carmen
Hi!
Two of my friends are traveling to PDC in mid-January for 3 nights and just want to stay at a simple, clean, and cheap place. I can't seem to find a place on the internet and am believing (from a friend) that I should be able to go down there and find something decent WITHOUT an advance booking. Most people don't do this, but we're kind of free spirits. I can't imagine the entire place being booked up. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

I don't think you will have any problem finding a room once you get there. I was there in Oct/Nov and there were lots of vacancies. But I think there will be more tourists there in January, so maybe more rooms are taken and prices will be a bit higher than when we were there. After having walked around the city and looked at plenty of available rooms, we decided on a hotel in the middel of 5ta Avenida. The hotel is called Santa Lucia and is very nice. All rooms had private bath, tv and fans, and we paid 200 pesos (ca 20 usd) pr night.

SINCE its winter well everything will be busy..other option i can tell you is just have a look in hte phone cabins there local people offer rooms in tehir homes..

Should be no problem. The $20 hotels have a brisk turnover and there are a LOT of pretty ones in the $40-50 category. Just jump the bus down from Cancun and start poking around the area. IIf you have trouble there, try nearby areas like Tulum or Cozumel, easily available by bus or boat. Worst tha could happen would be head back up to Cancun

I have stayed in Playa nine times in past 7 years. I highly recommend Hotel Colibri (hotel-colibri.com) on the beach and Hotel Kin-Be (kinbe.com) 1/2 block to beach. This year we are staying at the Tropical Casablanca (tropicalcasablanca.com).
All are clean and range from US$40 to $75 per night.
There are plenty of small hotels and we have often gone to Playa without reservations.
Have a wonderful time. Playa is the nicest place we have ever visited and the people are wonderful.

I agree with everybody here, you will not really need reservations to find a place. I think that the town of Playa itself is busier in summer than winter. Most Canadians and U.S. travellers stay in resorts during the winter. It's busier in summer with all the European kids and backpackers.
If worse came to worse and there was nowhere at all to stay in Playa (impossible), hop a bus down to Tulum and stay a day on the beach there--that's not a bad thing.
