Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

Odd Bug

by ncbcrazynyc

This bug was found on the beach of our resort. It has the head of an alligator (no kidding) it looks like the alligator part was painted onto a peanut shell or something. It is pretty wild looking. We asked one of the guys at our resort about it and he seemed a little baffled but he did call it a "butterfly"...not sure how true that is though!

Yal-Ku Crocodile.

by whitneyone

It's a beautiful lagoon, in the north end of Akumel and is much smaller than Xel-Ha, and much cheaper. About 6 bucks a person. Don't expect food and lockers to store your things. The only place to lounge is on the rocks, although there are a few benches too. What a bad time to be without a water camera.
Lots of fish, especially around the staircases to the water There are a few islands too. We were watching an Egret on one of the small islands, when my boyfriend noticed, and pointed out to me, what he believed to be an iguana. UM, it wasn't an iguana...it was a 4 foot long CROCODILE. The bird made a slow exit and we were transfixed, with awe and with trepidation. How could there be a CROCODILE not 15 feet away from us?? Not wanting to turn our backs, we told the few other swimmers about it, and no one wanted to get as close as we did. The croc sometimes bared his teeth, sometimes closed his mouth, but never moved. Lucky for us. We just have to believe that this is not an every day event at Yal-Ku but please be aware of it. Upon telling the managers, they spoke among themselves, asked its size and then told us that he never bothered anybody. I have a hard time believing anyone has trained a croc...this is no way ruined my day, it was quite exiting, but we did get out of the water after another 10 minutes of nervous snorkeling.

Update August 2005..
We have heard of one other person who saw a croc right around the same time as we did.
It has been reported that it was relocated

PLANE

by Maria_75

Mexico is a very big country, and if you plan to do a lot of travelling you should consider taking a plane at least once. The bus from Playa del Carmen to Mexico City takes 24 hours. We enjoyed it so much at the Mayan riviera so our busjourney back was postponed as long as possible. But when we checked the price on planetickets there was no longer any doubt. 24 hours on bus for 500 pesos or 2 hours on plane for 800 pesos...?!? Hard choice... ;) So we stayed even longer and took a plane from Cancun to Mexico City.

Planefares on routes that are highly trafficated can be quite cheap. But if you want to take a route which is not as popular, you might have to pay a lot more. Anyway you should check out the price if you are going to travel long distances. If it's a little bit more expencive it might be a good choice when you think about the time you save. Plus sleeping on overnightbuses can sometimes be a bit difficult.

Great chicken and tacos!

by caribe_utopico about No name either =)

On the van "terminal" that takes you to Tulum you can get tacos to have lunch later on the day.

You can also get chicken barbecue with other stuff. This will save you a few bucks later during the day when going to Cobá or Tulum (although vans don't go to Cobá, just to Tulum and other spots on the way).

Cheap place to eat, and very local and clean. Don't think it is a fancy restaurant.

Snorkelling

by kirstylm

Caught the ferry across to Cozumel island and then went on a 3-hour snorkelling adventure on the 2nd best reef in the world!! Amazing visibility and saw so much - eagle ray, moray eel, sting ray, parrot fish, starfish, stone fish and more! No need to book beforehand - they come around to you on the ferry with offers or you can sort it out when you arrive on the island. Offers normally include water, soft drinks and beers on the boat. 3 hours involve going between 3 different areas on the reef, with about 35min of snorkelling at each site. Lots of fun, and so much to see!!! Not a very cheap adventure, but still worth every cent! We paid about $45 and then $40 return for the ferry (if I remember correctly!)! You can get it cheaper, but this was booked for us through our hotel.
