When in Oaxaca don't miss Las Golandrinas, a charming small hotel/guest house
For Oaxaca it's a bit high, maybe $40/night Las Golondrinas 'The Swallows' is an old mansion lovingly converted into a dream of a hotel/guest house. It sits in its own well-maintined semi-tropical garden and each room is slightly quirky, slightly different. The only problem is getting in! It's so popular with value-conscious folks that it's always full. Reserve early!
we will be in Oaxaca over Christmas this year and are wondering where to stay. We are two couples, but with our 20-something children joining us, there re maybe 7 or 8 of us needing a place to stay. Any recommendations for apartments to rent or are there family-style hotels that can accommodate all of us, without it costing a fortune? What is Oaxaca like that time of the year? Should we stay in town or outside? Any comments are greatly appreciated....

Last year I was in Oaxaca a couple of days before Christmas and went on to San Cristobal de las Casas from there. It is wonderful to visit around this time of the year.
It's a very special atmosphere, nice weather, lots of celebrations, special markets, and they have the night of the radishes (noche de rábanos): it's on the 23 of december, and very very special art, sculptures, artwork made of radishes! Unfortunately I missed it but if you're there you can tell me about it afterwards.
Don't miss the ruins of Monte Alban and the giant tree in Tule!
Can't tell you about a nice hotel, because I stayed in the cheapest hostel in town ;-)

I don't know about over Christmas, but we stayed at a place well recommended by various friends. It was delightful and inexpensive. Las Golondrinas is located about 5 blocks for the main square. We walked so much around the town I would hate to be far from the center.
There is a very good travel guide to Oaxaca published by Moon travel. It was extremely helpful in finding our way around
thanks so much. We'll check it out. This will be our first trip to Mexico and we are planning to also see Vera Cruz and Puebla. I can't wait.
I saw vercruz as well. At first it doesn't look very inviting, noisy and a little dirty... a harbour right in the city center. But you can't beat the atmosphere in the zocalo at night! The best I saw and experienced in mexico!
