We were ripped off by Sunset Group in Mexico

by scammed2

Since our story is similar to hundreds of others that can be found on the internet, I will try to be brief.

While on vacation celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary with our 2 young children; we were approached upon our arrival at the airport in Cancun and offered free attraction tickets in return for a $40 deposit and listening to a 90 minute time share presentation at Sunset Fishermans Village in Playa Del Carmen.

They picked us up at our hotel and held us hostage for 7 hours of lies and high pressure sales tactics at their beautiful, small (and curiously uninhabited) resort with a view of the island of Cozumel. We were "guaranteed" a good investment, rental income and easy availability. They even threw in a 2 year membership to RCI and 4 RCI bonus weeks! We in return, threw away $14, 000 of our hard earned money. Please - don't send any comments telling us how stupid we are - we know!

In October of 2007 we attempted to reserve any winter week in 2008 and were told that there was absolutely no availability until May. We were offered a studio for one week (when we had purchased a one bedroom) or "mandatory all inclusive" in Cancun. The studio was out of the question with 2 kids and their all inclusive in Cancun (not Playa Del Carmen where we had bought) was way overpriced. We could have gone to a 5 star all inclusive for less money!

Our calls and emails have been mostly ignored by Sunset Group. A letter from our attorney was also ignored. We have filed a complaint with Profeco, the government agency who act as mediators. Profeco will have 3 meetings with the company in Mexico before closing the file (possibly as unresolved). The first meeting took place on November 4th but we were not invited. Sunset Group made us an "offer of cancelling our contract without a refund, we have declined their offer. They are now threateaning us with a US collection agency for 2008 maintenance fees when we were refused a reservation in 2008!

We have contacted Mastercard, RCI, the Mexican Embassy in Canada and the Canadian Embassy in Mexico since we beleive that they all have a duty and obligation to warn tourists about Sunset Group and it's fraudulent practices.Has anyone had any success with obtaining a refund from these banditos? Is a class action possible (from Canada) and has anyone had any success with obtaining a refund outside of the 5 day waiver period? Please constructive responses only...thanks.

Wow, seven hours is a long time. If I were holed up with salesmen/women for 7 hours I would have insisted on a much better deal. Regardless, sorry for your experience. Unfortunately, I've discovered that you need to make your reservations for many resorts at least a year in advance if possible including at the Sunset Fishermans in Playa Del Carmen although it may be easier now due to the Swine Flu scare. Typically, if you call late they put you in the less than desirable resorts if possible. One plus of going to Cancun now is they are just doing beach restoration there so the beaches should be nice.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

Money exchange

by RJ1967

There are many money exchange offices, such as this one, up and down 5th street in Playa del Carmen. As you can see by the flags, they accept many different currencies.

There are several ATM machines along 5th avenue as well.

Sian Kan Biosphere

by whitneyone

You have to take a boat here. And you can catch one just inside the ruins at Myuil, south of Tulum. 25 dollars a person a guide will take you though the huge lagoons and narrow canals used by the Maya to tranport goods about a zillion years ago.
It's a small boat. We did see a crocodile. Maybe he was guarding a temple..ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY BOAT!

Travel from the airport-public bus

by Dabs

I briefly thought about using the public bus to get from the airport to Playa del Carmen as the cost was much less ($71 vs. $24 for two round trip) but I'm glad that we didn't. We would have just missed a bus and would have had to wait for 1 hour 45 minutes for the next bus. When you are only there for 4 days, and hour and 45 minutes is a long time to waste.

The attached website had ticket prices and schedules

Tacos al Pastor

by Dabs about Tacos Bill

Tacos Bill was a few blocks away from 5th Avenue, the main tourist street in Playa Del Carmen. This is not a place for those particular about hygiene, you will not find the restaurant standards of the US in Mexico, of course, several people recently died at a ChiChis in Pittsburgh so maybe our standards aren't that great.

At Tacos Bill, you could see where they were cooking and "cleaning" the plates. At least they put a napkin down on the plate befre they put the food on it.

The tacos al pastor were delicious, apparently it is a secret recipe and they are hard to find here in the US, drat! Tacos al Pastor are made from pork meat that has been marinated in a secret recipe and then cooked on a rotisserie like gyros with pineapple on top. They should be garnished with cilantro (coriander), chopped onion and the pineapple.

Ferry to Cozumel

by Pat&ZoAnn

Even if you're not a diver, don't miss a trip to Cozumel. Ther ferry takes about 30-40 minutes, costs about $18.00 USD return (I think), and there are shops, restaurants and bars, as well as Chankanab Park, close to the Mayan Barrier Reef.
