Lodging on 5th Avenue

We just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hotel Lunata in Playa del Carmen. Having stayed at the mostly all inclusive Gran Porto Real on the north side of town last year, I was looking for a small charming hotel in the center of town.

First the positive: the hotel was indeed charming, beautifully decorated and very clean rooms and reception area, pleasant staff, terrific water pressure and lots of hot water. There was a lovely garden area where you could sit and relax, also where they served a continental breakfast (juice, coffee, cereal, croissants) every morning. The location was convenient to everything-all the restaurants along 5th Avenue, the ferry terminal, the bus station and the beach which was only about a block away. Scheduled pickup arranged by the hotel from/to the airport was fine and cheaper than a taxi. We asked if we could keep the room a couple of hours past checkout time and they allowed us to with no problem. A/C made the room very comfortable to sleep at night. An in room safe was provided at no charge.

Now for the negative: we stayed in a king room and the bed was perhaps the hardest I have ever encountered, perhaps because the mattress was placed on top of a concrete slab. The 5th Avenue view from the balcony wasn't really all that to look at but the noise at night was loud (sort of like being on Bourbon St. in New Orleans except with a mariachi band!) and again in the morning when they started the construction work. Ask for a garden view!!!!!

Just a note-some of the rooms are 3 flights up and there's no elevator. Not a big deal for me but it might be for some. Also, there is no pool but most of the pools at the smaller resorts aren't much anyways.

Re: Accomodations

Playa del Carmen has such wonderful reasonably priced restaurants, you might consider going non all inclusive. The www.playadelcarmeninfo.com website has a listing of some non all inclusives, we stayed at the Hotel Lunata (write on my PDC page), next time I think we will try for Playa Maya based on reviews.

I don't know why you'd want to stay at an all-inclusive in a town full of cheap, charming hotels and cheap restaurants.
