And more native animals
by Dabs
We've seen the large band of coatis on both of our trips to Riu Tequila, in 2009 they were hanging out near the pool and near some of the rooms near the pool waiting for someone to take pity on them and give them a snack. They seem to come out near sundown and don't appear to be particularly frightened of the large international group of sun worshippers that were busy snapping pictures of them, perhaps they knew just how well fed we all were by the resort!
Coatis are a member of the raccoon family and are about 1-2 feet long with their tail being almost as long as their bodies. They have long snouts and their facial markings are similar to raccoons. They weigh between 6 and 18 lbs., about the same size as a domestic cat.
Shipwreck Site
by whitneyone
A spanish ship sank in this area over a hundred years ago and some people still search for beads and gems and find them. Do not go expecting to discover a bounty. I found one bead and one gem.
This beach is directly across the highway from the Aktun Chen Cenote but is hard to get to due to the HUGE hotel that wants you to buy a day pass to walk though the lobby. You can walk around it, but it's quite a walk.
Best cocktails!
by kirstylm about Pirate Bar and Restaurant
Best location!!! Divine cocktails, and good food too! Very friendly staff. Bar is right on the beach - i.e. sand under your feet! Instead of barstools, they have swings!! :-) They also have the cheapest cocktails around! Sex on the Beach - cocktail!! The barmen are also good at coming up with their own cocktails! And yummy quesadillas!
Great sandwiches!
by caribe_utopico about Café Hot
Great bread, great sandwiches, great servers! Nice people. Great to star the day. Not the cheapest breakfast though.
There are several of these around playa. I saw two at least. They make their own bread and have many choice, so something is guaranteed. The bread you are eating is FRESH and tasty!
The Mayan Pyramids

Go there! This structures have been standing for centuries. They are some of the most amazing sights North America has to offer. Stand atop a pyramid looking over the lush jungles of the yucatan. Learn how human sacrafice played a role in honoring the gods. Wander of into ruins frozen in time littered in over grown forest and wildlife.
