Any Tips On What Would Be Fun To Do In Playa!

by dee03

Me and 4 of my friends will be staying at the Occidental Grand Xcaret in June. Were all in our early 20's and wanted some tips on what would be fun for our age group to do. I heard good night life goes on in Playa Del Carmen. If anyone has any suggestions for us on tours or nightclub/bars..it would be greatly appreciated!!

on the beach, the Blue Parrot is probably the most lively, and i think thursdays is ladies night. and there is another club down by the ferries in the mall area that has ladies night, also maybe on thursday, which is good b/c it's expensive. sorry i forget the name. it's upstairs and i think it has 4 letters. (i don't know if you are men or women, i'm a guy so i always have to pay for this sh*t). forget about Carlos and Charlies or whatever bar it is over there. overpriced.
Also Cafe Mambo is a huge club that has a big 10+ piece salsa band on fridays and other nights. i like it lots.
i'd stay away from
do you dive? if so you should do the cenote dive. that is very unique. it's cave diving.
and even though everybody does it, a day down in Tulum is nice b/c you can go to the beach right at the ruins! you don't really need a tour, just catch a van and make sure they let you off at the ruins. but you have to walk a little way.

good luck and let me know if you have some more questions.

Playa is small enough that you can easily check out the clubs along the beach. Many face the ocean, so you can walk and decide along the way.
Tulum is worth visiting even though it is very popular. One the way I recommend a stop at Cafe del Mar (directions are on my Off the Beaten Path tip).
As mentioned on the previous post, exploring a cenote is a lot of fun, as long as nobody in your group is afraid of small places/caves.
If you are interested in the Mayan ruins, you might like Coba because you can rent and ride bikes around the area. Coba isn't as developed and restored as the more famous Chichen Itza.

Let me know how your trip goes, My brother is getting married and we're seriously thinking about Playa for the bachlor thing. There should be a half a dozen of us, all in our mid to early 20s. The girls are going to Vegas, we're going to Mexico. We were originally thinking Cabo, but I've have heard a few bad things??? Let me know.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

And more native animals

by Dabs

We've seen the large band of coatis on both of our trips to Riu Tequila, in 2009 they were hanging out near the pool and near some of the rooms near the pool waiting for someone to take pity on them and give them a snack. They seem to come out near sundown and don't appear to be particularly frightened of the large international group of sun worshippers that were busy snapping pictures of them, perhaps they knew just how well fed we all were by the resort!

Coatis are a member of the raccoon family and are about 1-2 feet long with their tail being almost as long as their bodies. They have long snouts and their facial markings are similar to raccoons. They weigh between 6 and 18 lbs., about the same size as a domestic cat.

Shipwreck Site

by whitneyone

A spanish ship sank in this area over a hundred years ago and some people still search for beads and gems and find them. Do not go expecting to discover a bounty. I found one bead and one gem.

This beach is directly across the highway from the Aktun Chen Cenote but is hard to get to due to the HUGE hotel that wants you to buy a day pass to walk though the lobby. You can walk around it, but it's quite a walk.

Best cocktails!

by kirstylm about Pirate Bar and Restaurant

Best location!!! Divine cocktails, and good food too! Very friendly staff. Bar is right on the beach - i.e. sand under your feet! Instead of barstools, they have swings!! :-) They also have the cheapest cocktails around! Sex on the Beach - cocktail!! The barmen are also good at coming up with their own cocktails! And yummy quesadillas!

Great sandwiches!

by caribe_utopico about Café Hot

Great bread, great sandwiches, great servers! Nice people. Great to star the day. Not the cheapest breakfast though.

There are several of these around playa. I saw two at least. They make their own bread and have many choice, so something is guaranteed. The bread you are eating is FRESH and tasty!

The Mayan Pyramids

by ageless_mind

Go there! This structures have been standing for centuries. They are some of the most amazing sights North America has to offer. Stand atop a pyramid looking over the lush jungles of the yucatan. Learn how human sacrafice played a role in honoring the gods. Wander of into ruins frozen in time littered in over grown forest and wildlife.
