Safety in Mexico
by ciaobella55
If you are concerned about violence and your safety in Playa del Carmen, don't be. A lot of the media reports are grossly exaggerated. Sure there is violence in parts of Mexico, but mostly in the border zones and amongst cartel members. Quintana Roo where Riviera Maya is, is amongst the 3 safest areas in Mexico. I recently spent 2 weeks there and didn't feel unsafe for a moment, and have even bought a condo there so I'm not concerned at all. The crime rate in parts of the USA are higher than Mexico, in fact the murder rate in Washington DC is 4 TIMES that of Mexico City. Do your own research and don't believe all you see on TV.

Every beach i went on seem to have quite shape large rock or stones. Also when walking out into the sea it seemed to be the same but you just carn't see them due to the water at times. I got some before i went out there and used them all the time. Well worth thinking about taking them.
Away from the usual...

Just above the 5th avenida on the left and on the same street as the Blue Parrot, my friends and I discovered a little secret besides a lil pizza stand.
Its a fantastic mix of latin and europeans surrounded by art, chandeliers, funky bathrooms and really good music. The atmosphere is A-1 and the crowd is interesting. So after your walk on the beach under the moon, or after an appero drink elsewhere or even a late dinner -- Go try this place out. You will not be dissapointed.
There is no hiphop or R&B so if that is the type of music you are looking for, stick to Capitan Tutix and the Blue Parrot.
There is a covered area downstairs that looks like any other club but the secret is upstairs, so go -- get on the terrasse and order a drink and ENJOY.
Jimmy Buffett where are you?

This place was so cool! Driving back to our resort from Tulum, Hubby, Mr. Sideroad, took a detour into the town of Akumal. On the way, we passed this restaurant with what looked like shark teeth jutting out from the stairs. Of course, we had to turn around and check it out - what a place! It was literally 'on the beach' as there was no floor - your toes were in the sand at the bar. Rather than bar stools, they had bar swings and some were large enough for 2. Down the beach a ways was a tall 'crowsnest', like you'd see on a pirate ship. One could climb up to the top (my 5 year old did - yikes) and have drinks brought up in a bucket on a pulley!! Honestly, you'd expect Jimmy Buffett any minute.
Its definitely a must-see!! Ok, we didn't actually eat there, as we had brought along box-lunches from the resort. But the cervezas and margaritas were fabulous, and the ceviche looked very tempting.
Treat yourself at Ajua

The food is very good but the service makes it an exceptional experience. I came here at least 6 times and every time the service was great. oh, and the food was very good, too. But for the price I really expected it to be.
Oh yeah, and they have free Wi-Fi! On the more moderate end of the price range, the brochettes are yummy. From the more expensive end of the menu I had their coconut shrimp and they were big ole wild shrimp like one rarely gets anymore. Really good. I had breakfast here once and it's just not their forte, so leave that to someone else.
Strong margaritas get delivered on your waiters head!
