tipping at A/Is

by Karensa

I've heard all kinds of stories about tipping at AI resorts. Are guests expected to carry tip money around with them all the time? How often do you tip the bartender, maid, food server etc.? How much & how often? I've also heard that tipping doesn't always help get faster/better service. Any comments, "tips", or suggestions are much appreciated.
P.S. Its a 5* resort.

most things at these resorts are signed for - so you add the tip. You should check the fine print - some of these resorts have automatic grat's.
I have found that tipping will improve the way you are treated. However if it affects it a lot. I would tell them at time of checkout and think twic about returning.

North Americans and their obsession with tipping!!

Thanks for the replies. I agree.... 4% of our total bill isn't too much to ask.
I plan to carry a wad of small US bills in my fanny pack! When we were at an AI a few years ago in PV, the waiters and bartenders always looked surprised and seemed apprehensive to accept a tip. We rarely saw people tipping but I will go prepared just in case.

Travel Tips for Playa del Carmen

Mosquito Repellent

by LiamJackson10

You should take a plug in mosquito repellent and spray repellent as they are every where and they hurt like hell and itch. I received 10 bites in one night and it was quite painfull the next morning.

Swinging around the bar...literally!

by s_odyssey about The Blue Parrot

Have a drink by the bar while seated on a swing. Besides this original concept, they have a dance floor on the beach, fire dancers and an indoor section just for you house music lovers.

The sound system within the new house section was quite disappointing, hopefully by the time you will make it out there, they will have sorted that problem out. Wear what you feel...

Oriental magic on a plate!

by pauleast about Kampai

This is an open sided restaurant situated in Casita area on second floor of concierge building.
Lovely setting with lots of nice aesthetic touches to give sense of romantic restaurant (dim lighting, candles, soft music etc).
Menu is simply fantastic with choice of 6 courses including some great sushi and fish dishes. The rib eye stir fry is so tasty I had it twice! This is a must-do for your stay at EDR and is probably one of the most popular restaurants on site. smked salmon rolls were great, rib eye stir fry tasty!

5th Avenue

by Maria_75

5ta Avenida, 5th Avenue, is a street that goes paralell with the beach. It's a pedestrian zone and is lined with hotels, restaurants, cafées, bars and all kinds of touristic shops. You can find all you want in this street, but try to explore a bit of the rest of the city too. The things you find in this street can be a bit expencive. But go away from this street and you will find many cheaper things. There are some really good and cheap mexican restaurants just a few streets away, and the salespeople are not as "pushy" as on 5ta Avenida.
