More about Xaman-ha Luxury Condominiums Playa del Carmen

The quiet side of Playa Del Carmen

by Bunununu about Xaman-Ha Condos

Xaman-Ha is in the gated community of Playacar, which is the upscale addition to Playa Del Carmen. Being gated adds security but also keeps out the venders and adds to a more "layed back" atmosphere. The Xaman-Ha condos are right on the beach next door to the much larger Continental Plaza Hotel. Each room has it's own balcony or patio and every room has an ocean view. It has a swimming pool but no restaurants or bars. The restaurant and swim-up bar at the Continental is available to Xaman-Ha guests. Xaman-Ha is about one block from the dock for the ferry boat to Cozumel. It is also only about a block from the south end of the mile long "pedestrian only" 5th Ave. The Xaman-Ha aviary is also within walking distance. It was also very affordable. Maid service every day except Sunday. Our condo was managed by Playacar Beach Properties and they were extremely helpful in attending to our needs during our stay.

Surround yourself with birds

by peggydaly

I was leary of Xaman Ha aviary, but pleasantly surprised. All the birds were not captive, some just like the neighborhood and the easy meals. and what a lovely neighborhood it is south of the ferry. at least for birds. as a human i prefer north of the ferry.

Xaman-Ha: Mayan Ruins in Playa Del Carmen

by Kaspian

Now here's something I did not know! There are some fairly nice Mayan ruins within the town of Playa Del Carmen itself! Some sizable pyramids and structures are scattered throughout the Playacar area--only a twenty minute walk from 5th Avenue.
The ruins are of a town that existed called "Xaman-Ha", which means "waters of the north". This was a place where people gathered to travel back and forth from the mainland to the island of Cozumel. It also served as a stop on the Mayan commercial sea route that extended from Veracruz to the country of Honduras.
There are three archaeological sites for Xaman-Ha altogether, two of them are grouped together. The roadside markers, which are about a half-kilometre apart from each other, read "Site C" and "Sites E&F". The ruins are all within easy walking distance from the markers--only steps away. Well worn paths lead the way through light jungle foliage to the ruins. Make sure you go up the wooden steps at "Sites E&F" so you get to see all of it.
Although not anywhere near as impressive as the ruins at Tulum, Coba, or Chichen Itza, these are definitely worth a quick visit and they look brilliant when they're lit up at night with coloured spotlights. Very cool!

A monkey in the Ruins

by whitneyone

This is, I'm sure, not an every day event, but it was when we visited. Joe was born in a wildlife refuge where his mother abandoned him. Mauricio brought him to the beach every day next to Xaman-Ha. Sometimes on the beach, sometimes in the little jugle area above the beach and sometimes to the ruins just across the road. Joe is now 2 and as Mauricio, who has no children, says, it's like having three kids.

Just how Beautiful the Water is

by whitneyone

Most, but not all of my water photos/tips are under "OFF THE BEATEN BATH"

If you have never been to Mexico, you may have a preconcived notion of what it may be like in areas outside of the Major tourist areas. From my experience, it is some of the nicest water in the world. Remember, this part of Mexico is the Caribbean!
This is right in front of the Xaman Ha Condos

Do I need to be concerned about the drinking water and/or malaria in Playa Del Carmen? Also, has anyone ever stayed at either Xaman Ha or Fisherman Village? What do you think about these accomondations? Does anyone know the average ocean temperature? I'm going on my Honeymoon and I want to cover all my bases so there are no negative surprises! Thanks for any help/advise you can give!

I strongly recommend to drink the table- water which can be bought in supermarkets at a quite cheap rate.

I haven't heard of any issues with malaria, but any normal bug repelent should work. Bottle water is the safest way to go. We have never had any problems with getting sick from taking showers or using tap water for brushing our teeth.

Water temp is warm enough not to need a wet suit unless you are going diving and then only a thin one or a shorty will work. The water is much warmer than the Pacific.

I stayed in Playa del Carmen last summer, in Playa itself I didn't get too many bites but the evenings were more of a problem. I just used a basic repellent and that solved the problem. You do not mention what time of year you are going but last summer I dived without a wetsuit and for normal swimming the sea was a welcome cool down from the heat of the day. As far as water goes, there are plenty of stores selling bottled water cheaply and I would recommend that as opposed to drinking tap water. Any other queries I can help you with just e-mail me.
