Disappointed
by Cualcosa about Hotel Amar Inn
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Amar Inn in early March, 2007. We are seasoned travelers and accustomed to modest lodgings, but in our opinion, this place is not to be recommended. The “penthouse” is the only room with a decent view of the ocean and has no balcony. One of the windows was covered with a cloth stapled to the wall which prevented cross ventilation. The TV didn’t work... which is no big thing, but the proprietor’s promise to fix it was obviously a brush-off. Oh, and bring your own toilet seat . . . it will doubtless be better than their cushion type with peeling plastic cover . . . All of this despite charging $80/night, an amount equivalent to that charged for many other much nicer beach-front rooms with balconies in nearby alternative hotels (Ojo de Agua, Villas Latinas etc).
a most perfect cheviche
by call_me_rhia about ojo de agua
A restaurant attached to the Ojo de Agua hotel, right on the beach - where the accommodating waiters are keen on setting up tables so that you don't even have to go inside the restaurant.
About service: more than slow it's completely disorganised... it's better not to be in a hurry. Try the mix cheviche. It's delicious. Cheviche is a speciality made of uncooked fsh marinated in lime, onions, tomatoes and spices - absolutely yummy. You can have other types of cheviche (caracol only for example), but the mix one is the msot superb.

We flew to CANCUN, but then we got the car (you can use taxi) and we went 15 min south on Rivera MAya to Puerto Morelos. Looking at your children age you don't want to go to Cancun as you don't want to expose your children to misbehaving crowd of young drunk Americans behaving rudely at the pool drinking and smoking grass.
You want to go to Puerto Morelos where your kids will enjoy the beach, playground and various available day trips. The most important they will be extremely safe as the place is full of children...nice and well behaving children. Puerto MOrelos as most of MExican towns has a huge square in the middle, but surprisingly is not a park it is a playground where children in all ages hand out until midnight. The parents usually sit in the restaurants surrounding the square and watch kids from there. As I said it is extremely safe. All local people know your face after one day and say hello to you. Accommodation is cheaper than Cancun and food is really cheap. You can bring your snorkeling mask and you can snorkel just off the beach for free (I recommend the inflatable stuff for kids to hold on to and vest for the youngest). You can also pay $25 per person and have fisherman take you to the ref ( it is safe as everybody must wear a vest and I have seen little kids being just fine).
See my Puerto Morelos tips and don't forget to click at all photos.

OH, and I don't know if this matter or not, but in Puerto Morelos you can find families from all over the World. You can hear almost every language and see every race. Lots of people travel with tiny little babies as the town is very peaceful. There is one hotel that's loud and there is some bar scene, but it is to the side and if you don't go there, you would never know. I recommend hotels right on the beach like Villas LAtinas or Ojo de Agua....this way you don't need to carry your valuables to the beach as your room is right there.
Beach is safe. WE never left our wallet on it (while in the water) but our bag with our clothes, sun lotion, books and 50 Peso for lunch was always safe and intact after we returned from swimming. You see lots of untenanted belongings on the beach. Local people are very proud in making the place safe and friendly.
