Stroll from the Waterfront to The Zólaco
by grandmaR
One of the things the founding families of Cozumel really did right was to construct a broad sidewalk along the waterfront next to the sea wall. The seawall which is frequently white washed and trimmed in aqua has cement benches built into it.
The best time for a walk is in the early evening, cool, sunset, all the shops will be open until 9ish. San Miguel is very safe even late in the evening (and despite what many cruise reps would have you believe.) Again, we just can't stress enough how safe and friendly the downtown area is. Do not be afraid to explore back in the town.
If you're a shopper, there are out of the way places to which you can walk. And where, usually, they'll bargain. (Don't expect any store on the waterfront to do this, however! The clerks aren't authorized to give discounts.)
There is often a street fair in the main square or Zólaco. Sometimes there are artists displaying their wares. Do check to see if the items were made in Mexico and not in China or Haiti. Near Christmas I saw a line up of toys along one side of the square.
Two of the photos (#2 and #3) were taken in 1998. The other three are similar scenes from 2007
Rent a Car and Drive around
by kaybsix
Drive around the Island. Do not miss this activity. It makes the trip. Cars rent from 35 to 45 dollars a day. Taxi is $5.00 each way to town and $10.00 each way to airport. You will spend cost of car in no time.
Rent and drive around it is great

"and Cruise Ship stops 2007"
When we stayed in San Miguel, I was a work-site inspector at home, I was interested in how these guys were working on this building near Papa Hogs.
At night we walked around and ate in the different restaurants. We were there in the middle of December, and the town was decorated for Christmas. This picture is a collage of the parade that was going on in the street below our restaurant.
Just as for my Belize pages, I am currently unable to find the notebook in which I wrote the narrative of our visit. So this page is Under Construction until I find that.
In 2007, after Hurricane Wilma devastated Cozumel including taking out the cruise ship docks. For awhile, ships had to tender ashore. There are still signs of damage but when we returned by cruise ship in 2007 it was obvious lots of progress had been made.
On the first visit, we took a taxi into town, and did some shopping. On the second visit we did an Eco Tour
