More about Casa del Mar Cozumel

Don't put your family through this.

by TripAdvisor Member ABMOM

Please don't put your family through this. If you are going for diving only... then this is the place for you. If you need a vacation... please don't even attempt this place. I too got violently ill. Food poisioning clearly! As did many of the guests I spoke to. We changed hotels after 3 days. I could go on... but I would rather not relive it. If this is the only hotel you can afford on the island, then I suggest you stay home. Not worth any amount of saving $$$$$.

An oasis in the ocean

The Casa Del Mar is just a short $5 cab ride south of downtown. The service we received was excellent from both the hotel and restaurant. The rooms were cool, clean, and sizeable. The food was average, but the drinks were given with a generous pour. Considering the fact Hurricane Emily had decimated many resorts and businesses, Casa Del Mar still has a pristine garden and inviting courtyard. The free beach just over the bridge was a perfect way to prepare for the longer snorkel excursions further out in the Ocean. The hotel is accommodating to families, groups, or to couples. Overall, my experience was above average. When I visit Cozumel again, Casa Del Mar will be my choice.

We just returned from a stay at the Casa del Mar and had a great time. During our last trip to Coz we stayed at the Allegro and it was also very nice, more of a resort atmosphere, but we enjoyed being closer to town this time. Do not get me wrong, if you require an American style four star hotel then this is not the place for you. In fact, if that is what you are looking for then Cozumel might not be the place for you in general. Check-in went smoothly and the staff was incredibly nice and helpful all week. The rooms were a little small but not too cramped for two people. They do have larger two story cabanas available at pretty decent rates too. The room was clean with a sliding glass door that led out to a very small patio. Pegs for hanging wet dive gear/ swimwear are on the wall on the patio. The beds were hard but if you have been to Cozumel you know that all of the beds are hard. I heard that they will bring you a pad for the bed if you ask. The pool is nice with a swim up bar where you can order drinks from the restaurant bar. The waiters will also bring food and drinks to you poolside. We paid an extra $25.00 US per person per day to get the all inclusive plan which included all drinks and meals at the poolside restaurant which is open air, so flies could sometimes be a problem but hey, it's an open air restaurant. The food ranged from very good to decent. A short foot bridge from the pool area leads over the road to the ocean. There is no real beach (normal for Cozumel) but they do have a "fake beach" with recliners and umbrellas in the sand. Drinks and food can also be ordered from the waterfront (all inclusive plan covered these too) and you can even get a massage. Del Mar Aquatics dive shop is on site and they do have lockers available if you dive with them (bring your own padlock). The dive operation was good although I have heard they run cattle boats during the busy season. When we were there the crew outnumbered the divers on most days. The dive masters were great and they ran professional but relaxed boats. You can buy beer, liquor, soft drinks, sunscreen etc. from a small store right next to the hotel. Bring a small collapsible cooler for the room. A few other dive shops and restaurants are within walking distance and it only cost about $4-5 to get into town by cab. All in all the hotel was great if you are looking for nice, affordable accommodations. You can expect small inconveniences like a slidling glass door lock that was a pain and a television picture that left a lot to be desired but you shouldn't be going to Mexico to watch television, you can do that at home. In fairness however, I never brought these things up with the front desk so they didn't have an opportunity to fix them. We will return to Cozumel and stay at the Casa del Mar as soon as we can.

Will stay again, again and again

We've been staying at Casa Del Mar for years. The staff are friendly and courteous all the time. It's the same staff. It's nice to know when we go back, usually twice a year that you will see the same faces. We appreciate that. The rooms are always clean. The food is good and is served fast. It is not a glitzy 5 star hotel - but we don't have to have that. We like it the way it is. The dive shop is wonderful. The same dive masters for the 4 1/2 years that we have been going. They are very knowledgeable and are great at little details as far as showing us marine life that we would have missed. They have personalities. We have never dove with anyone else and never will unless something major happens like they all leave. Overall we love everything about it including looking out our hotel rooms and seeing iguanas basking in the sun. It is diffenently our home away from home.

Okay, considering...

We arrived two days after the hurricane. No power, no a/c, no cable but the dive shop was up and running. The hotel would turn on a generator in the evenings for power. We stayed in one of the mini villas. It was very nice and clean. Most of the landscaping was torn-up but repaired before the end of the week. Diving was fantastic. The service at the dive shop was okay. The town seemed to get it together by the end of the week. Could have stayed longer but it was back to the daily grind...the place was okay considering.

student review

by A TripAdvisor Member

Durning the summer (july-august)i spent about 2 weeks at casa del mar. for anyone who is considering this hotel in mind for a summer vacation you should definately keep in mind there is a school program of about 100 teenagers (give or take) that takes place within that time frame. Being one of these students i can say it will definately be noisy at all times of the day/evening and a very good chance that most of these teenagers will be drunk at all times of the day and occasionaly sick.

As for the hotel itself it is nothing paticularily appealing and has an older look to it. Staff arent always on the ball and difficult to communicate with if you need something done asap.

The food is awesome, a great casadia place across the street, great view of the ocean, restaurant staff are very friendly.

The hotels beach, nachi cocom, is about a 15 min drive from the hotel (not walking distance) and they will charge you ridiculous prices for cab rides over. A lot of the cruise ship passangers will go to this beach.

Overall its a good hotel if your standards arent particularly high and dont expect a lot from staff.

Casa del mar is a favorite!

by TripAdvisor Member mollymoff

We have stayed at casa del mar twice now and really like it.the beds are very firm(hard on the back)but otherwise everything else was great we will stay again anytime although would not pay extra for ocean view because it was looking at the ocean over other roof tops and we just didnt think it was worth it.

Not the Best or even 2nd Best

by A TripAdvisor Member

Not the best for your money is the way I would describe Casa del Mar. Having stayed at a dozen or so hotels, resorts, and rental properties in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, this is at the bottom of the list. The rooms are very clean and somewhat spacious, but the beds are rock hard, as are the pillows (are they pillows or bags of Quikrete?). The sheets seem to be made of sandpaper (but the maids make the most of what they have by leaving delightful towel "sculptures" on the beds each day). I did not see one bug in my room the entire trip, which is always a plus! Everything is freshly painted since the hurricane, however their color scheme (army green and midnight blue) are not very tropical. The staff in the restaurant/bar was unfriendly at best, bordering on rude. I have never been treated poorly or even indifferently at ANY bar or restaurant in this area, so our group was very disappointed in the service. The beach access is very crude at this point, you have to walk across the street fighting traffic because the over-the-street walkway is not up and running yet due to the hurricane, however the snorkeling right off the beach in front of the hotel (get in just north of the Atlantis Dive Shop) was the best we found on the island; lots of starfish, barracuda, parrot and puffer fish. The food was pretty good, the breakfast buffet was included in our package and was plentiful and fresh, lunches and dinners are affordable and tasty. The drinks at this place were lousy. How can you screw up a daquiri? This place can. All in all, I would stay someplace else unless you get an unbeatable deal at this hotel.

food is bad

We made the mistake of buying the all inclusive plan, although it might have come in handy for the drinks. I thought $3.20 for a corona was a bit steep. Rooms were very very clean, but small. Staff was friendly. Pool area was ok, noisy due to main street right in front. No beach area left, a shuttle to beach club was available however. Beach club was nice. Will not return- I think there are better hotels for the money.

Could Be Better!

by TripAdvisor Member Merlin0525

Room was okay except extremely hard bed and very tiny bathroom which had a ceiling made of sticks to cover exposed pipes. There were weird wood slat bathroom vents which opened into the hallway so when walking through the halls you could smell when someone went to the bathroom. :( My biggest complaint of the hotel was how loud it was with the open slat vents (hard to explain) which basically allowed you to hear everything in hallways as if there were no walls. Loud slamming doors and screaming children every morning at 6:30!! Also water in bathroom sink smelled like sewage. Staff was very friendly except one who thought bringing me a few beers poolside was worth a $10 US tip rather than a $5 US tip and was therefore rude to me. I thought the food was good at the one on-site restaurant. Shore diving is practically non-existent with very limited access I guess after Wilma and there is no sandy beach front at this hotel. Concierge recommended the Lobster House as a good place to eat but we were over-charged there when the owner suddenly forgot how to speak English. Do not eat at Lobster House. Bill was $115.00 US for 2!!! Pool at hotel was nice with beautiful views of ocean and cruise ships. $6 US taxi ride to town was reasonable. Okay place to stay but would consider other hotels next trip to Coz.
