More about Posada Margherita
Excellent food and hosts, average rooms
We stayed at Posada Margherita in March of 2007 and had a great time.
The food is unbelievable (if you can manage a table as they book up quickly), and the hosts are a great asset as well. They make you feel
at home as soon as you arrive and are always available for a joke here or a rib there.
The rooms in general were just okay. I've stayed in many places in Tulum and I know that there is better. However, if this is the first time you go you will love it just the same. The rooms could be made into a great experience if they invested modestly in them. Simply installing a ceiling fan above the bed instead of placing a WalMart fan in the room would make a world of difference. Also, putting a mosquito over the bed would be priceless.
Those two simple changes would make this hotel an excellent choice.
Nice but overpriced
We stayed here for one night during a six day stay in Tulum. The accommodation was stylish, spacious and clean with lovely outside areas (although sadly we did witness here the graphic massacre of a cute gecko by an evil cat!).
We had a massive hole in the mosquito screen in our bathroom which the owners were unable to repair effectively. Luckily there weren't too may mozzies around.
The restaurant serves tasty Italian food but we felt both the restaurant and accommodation to be overpriced. I think we paid something like £70 per night, which felt more like London prices than what we were expecting in Mexico! Especially considering this did not include breakfast. The wine was lovely though.
The Italian owners are polite but unsmiling and somehow we never felt particulary welcome or relaxed compared to some other places we stayed.
However I did like the overall vibe of the rooms and beach areas with lovely gardens and comfy beach loungers and swinging beds on the beach. It definitely has a trendier vibe than some of the other beachfront places, but we prefer something perhaps a little less pretentious and a bit more rustic, which we found at La Conchita.
Such Unpleasant Owners
The Italian owners/managers are simply obnoxious. This is most evident at the restaurant. They do everything THEIR way to suit themselves, not the customers. When I pointed out that doing things to suit the owners rather than the customers is sort of the opposite of modern marketing theory, they agreed. And then they acknowledged that they have what they called "bad character." And then they said they didn't care, because the place is always full anyway, so they can act as they please with no repercussions. Really incredibly obnoxious....Never again. Unless you enjoy a lot of abuse, try another place....There are millions of better options in Tulum. Could not pay me to go back ever.
The Perfect Place to Stay
We loved this hotel! It was on a beautiful section of the beach. The rooms were nice and the restaurant was sooo tasty! I would highly recommend staying here when you go to Tulum.
The place is well run with lots of nice touches to make your stay at this rustic hotel even nicer. The rooms are pretty and look just like they do on their website. You can hear the ocean from your room and enjoy the breezes. The beach is nice and quiet and the food here is excellent .
Everything was very clean and the staff wonderful.
we loved it.............
This hotel is perfect for a nice, romanic getaway.
The staff is so nice, and very honest, the rooms were clean, well lit, and romantic, and the location was just on the best beach of tulum .The food at the restaurant was outstanding..........
Posada Margherita has it all!Well designed space, excellent food, great beach, friendly and helpful staff. We ended up eating at the restaurant almost every night and they gave us a great recommendation for Sunday night when they are closed. We can't wait to return!
Way to expensive and unfriendly owners
We were disappointed with our stay at Posada Margherita last summer. OK the place is nice, but com'on it's difficult to make life of guests horrible in such an amazing location as Tulum's sandy beaches anyway! Rooms are quite comfortable but not a 4 star level trust me! Light very dim, no air conditioning...so 132€ per night is way too expensive. It's in Mexico after all ! I'm sure there are much better Tulum alternatives than this hotel for this price.
But all of that would have been ok if the owners of the place had been welcoming. For some reason if you're not Italian do not hope to get a warm welcome there . It must a cultural thing, they seem no to be willing to offer any advice or help to non-italians. One of the 2 owners prefers to ride his kite surf all day long instead of getting some beach towels for the guests. Service is poor. Nobody in the staff can help or give advice about what to do in the surroundings. Worse: the staff never informed us of hurricane Dean coming in a couple of days. Were they expecting us to stay in wooden bungalows on the beach waiting for a disaster??? Then there is food: sure pastas are good but it's just pasta.... we're nor talking about a Michelin 3 stars restaurant here ! So 150$ for 3 breakfasts and 2 lunches is just amazing. On top of that no price is never mentioned (there are no actual menus) so the bad surprise comes at the end of your stay. If you eat there 3 meals a day the bill at the end of your stay must be totally outrageous!!
So at the end of the day, choosing Posada Margherita means you end up in a nice place but you feel like a bit of an intruder with unfriendly owners who act as if they couldn’t wait to see you leave and are trying to get as much money from you without offering the slightest service.
Sorry to be so negative I hate myself when complaining like that and I'm usually very cheerful about travel plans but this place is a rip off !!
Poor service, over priced
Arrogant staff has no idea what service is, the food is not special at all- similar food can be purchased in any restaurant in the USA for a quarter of the price. The rooms are not special at all and the prices are priced as if it was a hotel in NYC.
When I asked the owner what can I do around here he said nothing much !!
The hotel near by was very helpful and showed us what tours are available.
If you are not a chick in a bikini you will not get any attention from owner
Very disappointing- waste of money.
Perfect place for a beach holiday
We have just come back from a beach holiday in Mexico, spent in Posada Margherita in Tulum.
The place really has the perfect location for a lazy beach holiday - but if you want to, you can also get around. We had a car rented and therefore easily the possibility to combine sightseeing with lazing in the shadow on the beach in front of Posada Margherita. And the beach is absolutely wonderful: miles and miles of white sand and water in different shades of blue. Even though it was the beginning of high season, you can have the beach almost to yourselves at times - not only early in the morning.
The rooms at Posada Margherita are comfortable, nice, clean and not dim at all as mentioned in another review. The electricity in the place is generated by solar power, so the walkways are lit by candles and torches in the evening - but the rooms do have electric lights as well as candles.
We can absolutly not agree with the reviews complaining about the staff being arrogant or only friendly to Italians. Both Federico and Alessandro as well as the local staff were always friendly, helpful and could be approached at any time - and we are not Italian. They helped other guests organizing day trips and had a friendly word for everyone during our 5 day stay there.
The food was absolutely great and always freshly prepared. Okay, there are cheaper places around - but then you are free to choose where you go for your meals. Also, dinner always included a free Italian antipasti dish, which is a nice touch.
It is true that there is no real menu and prices are not advertised - but you can always get an update on what you have spent so far. Which is a good idea as the guys can only accept cash (in more than one currency).
We absolutely loved our stay: the perfect beach combined with the friendly, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere at Posada Margherita made this a very memorable holiday.
