Various Hotels: Hotels in the Zona Luz without reservations

Take a taxi from the airport for between $10-$15 dollars, and ask the driver to drop you off at the Zona Luz area. If you can handle the baggage yourself, say with luggage wheels on the street, then you'll save the hassle of a taxi driver eager to pick up another fare. The Zona Luz is very near the river and is a compact area of streets open only to pedestrians with numerous hotels. I didn't perceive any street dangers other than the traffic when we stepped out of the taxi. The main thing is to avoid getting a room remote from where that action is. Villahermosa is one of those cities where new hotels cluster around the airport and in other places around town that require a hefty taxi fare to get away from. We arrived in La Zona on Christmas Eve, so we had a little bit of a challenge getting the mid-level priced place we wanted. Some hotels were completely booked, but if all else failed, we knew that for a price we'd get a place somewhere in the area. As it turned out we had a great place, but unfortunately, I can't recall the name. All I remember is that we had to drag the bags up a series of steps outside the hotel, and that it had a disco downstairs. We bargain for a room several floors up to avoid the noise, but the price list was clearly posted on the wall. The price was reasonable, and service excellent enough that we stayed in the same hotel at both the beginning and end of the trip.

Unique Quality: The fourth floor room had private bath, two double beds, and satellite TV. The view over the colonial style rooftops in the morning was very nice, and we had no trouble finding a place to eat in the Zona Luz area. On the last night of this trip, we took advantage of the disco. Villahermosa isn't the cultural center of Mexico. The music was produced by a guy with an electronic box and a singer who held a guitar with only one string. The Mexican couples on the dance floor were not sophisticated dancers. When it comes to finding a room in this area without a reservation, it pays to check out the room before you put your credit card down. We were very pleasantly surprised, but some of the more dingy hotels in the area, which also cost less, may be below your standard. I don't give a website for information here, because except for the Howard Johnson Hotel (one of the pricier places in La Zona) most of these are poorly located.

HOTEL POSADA DON PEDRO: REASONABLY CHEAP AND IT'S CLEAN.

UNFORTUNATELY I'M NOT SURE OF THE ADDRESS FOR THIS PLACE. BUT IF I REMEMBER RIGHTLY, I THINK IT COST 300 PESOS A NIGHT TO STAY.

I WAS SATISFIED WITH STAYING THERE.

Unique Quality: THE FRONT ENTRANCE HAS A SECURITY GUARD AT THE DOOR AND A FACILITY THE PLACE INCLUDED WAS INTERNET ACCESS.

THE ROOM I STAYED IN HAD A DOUBLE BED, A TV, AND A PRIVATE SHOWER.

??: Just a shower

It's still a mystery but in the boring city of Villahermosa I was not able to find a hotel room! Apparently they were all fully booked - and I soon decided not to spend the night here but to move on.
Yet, after the night on the bus and walking the streets in the heat I badly needed a shower. So when I once more heard the words no rooms - I asked if I could just have a room for half an hour just to have a shower and leave.

They looked a bit puzzled, then showed me a little storage room where I put my stuff, then showed me a bathroom, where I had my shower, and then they said adios, shower only is for free. So I went back outside, got a bus ticket for the afternoon and enjoyed the Parque del Venta.

Unique Quality: Unique hospitality - did they really understand what I was trying to tell them in Spanish, or what did they think of me????
