Travel Tips for Veracruz

Men in Veracruz

by Ames24

You have heard of the term "gringo / gringa", and maybe others. In Veracruz the term used to refer to someone white is "güero / güera". When you walk down the street and pass by a man or group of men of whatever age, you will either be tossed some kind of comment with that term, or hissed at. They have this "ssSSSSSST" hiss, that they make, because they want you to turn so they can see your face. I found these things to be typical to Veracruz. It's annoying, but it's how it is and you get used to it even so. In a nutshell, you're more than likely to hear something out of the mouth of Veracruz men when you pass by, than not.

El Cofre de Perote

by PeteBrown444

"Going up the mountain."

It used to be hard work to get up the Cofre. You either went on your own feet or a horse. Now, (this must be progress...), you can take the bus. From either Xalapa or Perote, get up really early to get to the little town of Las Vigas before 7 am. There is a bus which goes up to a village called Tembladeras. That is as far as the road goes. You can hire some horses and a guide from here. Even if you don't get to the top, the whole experience is magic. Take a packed lunch (remember something for the horse). Listen to the wind sighing through the trees. Enjoy
