Hotel Lab Nah: Playa Del Carmen: Between 5th Ave and the water

by MikeySoft

One of the important things when renting a car is having good parking during the night. We found few hotels with private parking in Playa. The Lab Nah Hotel had private parking but it was first come, first park. Playa del Carmen is close enough to Cancun that people take a bus or taxi from the airport and spend several days if the week there. We found 3 hotels with private parking but Lab Han was the closes to the water and 5th avenue so we took it.

An interesting thing about the prices is that they quote them in both US dollars and Mexican Pesos. And you can pay using either, including credit card. The higher the room, the better the view, the higher to price. We took a room near the top. It was $77.00 USD or 886 Mexican pesos. We paid using a credit card. They asked if we want to charge US dollars. I said no, charge us in pesos because I know we would get a better rate from my bank. I paid each day because we were not sure how may days when we first arrived. The bank converted the 886 pesos to $58.05 and $57.72 USD. A lot better then $77.00. :)

This was near the end of our trip and we can see more families with children (because they were a spring break). Most of the college kids stay in Cancun during spring break.

The hotel had free wireless internet and we were able to pick up other hotels free wireless from our room They also have a computer with internet you can use for free.

The best thing about this hotel is the view from the upper rooms like we had and how close it is to the water and 5th avenue.

The hotel prices in Playa get cheaper the further away you get from the water and 5th avenue. This hotel is between the corner of 5th avenue and the water. We spend March 8 and 9, 2009 at this hotel.

The price includes a small breakfast.

Next to Hotel Acuario: Tulum: Near the Ruins

by MikeySoft

We arrived in Tulum late in the evening. I drove to a hotel near the entrance of the Tulum Mayan ruins which was in the lonely planet guidebook. They only had one room left. We didn't like the room and also felt it was expensive for that you were getting. We went to two different hotels across the street and end up staying in this one.

It was not the best hotel but we were tired and took it. We spent two nights there because we did not want to take the time to find a different one and this hotel was good enough.

Their restaurant was closed for the evening (mostly only day tourist seeing the ruins use it) so we went across the street to the restaurant in the hotel we didn't like. The restaurant appearance was good but the food was not. I had a simple chicken fajita. How could anyone make bad chicken fajita? They could.

.
The best thing about this hotel is it is close (walking distance) to the ruins and beach.

We spent March 6 and 7, 2009 in this hotel. They also charge extra for using a credit card so we used cash.

Piramide Inn Resort: Chichen Itza: Very close to.

by MikeySoft

This hotel is the closest one we found leaving Chichen Itza. We passed it by at first because of "Resort" in the name and felt it would be expensive and felt it didn't look that good from the outside.

After checking other hotels in the area (somewhat expensive), we decided to check this one and spent the night. I don't have the exact price because they charged extra for using a credit card so we paid cash. I think it was around 400 to 500 pesos. I remember asking for a discount, not sure if we got one.

Not too many people were staying there while we were there. There were some open huts in the garden where at least one person was staying. We had a room. The owner told us they get tour groups from Europe and none were there at the time.

They sale t-shirts with the hotel's motto. "Healing begins with love" I got one.

The rooms are basic, the best part is the large garden/park in the back outside the door to our room. The owner is very nice. Her farther or grand farther built the hotel for his retirement. She took it over after he pasted away. They gave us some of the mangos from the trees in the garden. It was an enjoyable place to stay.

Hotel San Clemente: Valladolid: Better then last hotel in Valladolid

by MikeySoft

We passed thought Valladolid twice and didn't like the hotel the first time so decided to try this hotel. This hotel charges extra to pay by credit card so I paid by cash. I don't have a credit card bill to verify the price but it was around the same as the other hotel, about 450 pesos for a double. We were unable to negotiate a cheaper price with this hotel. Wireless internet was also extra so we didn't use it.

This hotel was better then the first is that the beds and pluming were better. It is still a basic clean hotel good for a night stay. It also has private parking. The parking was larger with better private access.

Please rate my tips when you find them interesting, useful or like the photos. Thanks. :)

Hotel Maria de la Luz: Valladolid: Basic Hotel

by MikeySoft

We passed thought Valladolid twice and stayed in different hotels each time. We arrived late (because we were watching a bull fight). We paid 450 pesos for two people and only one breakfast. I think we negotiated a little off the asking price. This came out to $29.57 USD when my bank converted it to USD on my bill.

The hotel has a nice open court in the center with a restaurant where we had dinner and I had breakfast. The breakfast was mostly Mexican style and also had fruits and stuff like pancakes and French toast. However, my friend had a better breakfast with the fruits and things she got in the market.

Dinner was cheap at only 132 pesos for two including tip. However, we did not care for it too much.

They have free private and locked parking which is important when you rent a car. They also have free wireless internet in the main areas. It was weak in my room as they told me it would, so I sat on one of the outside tables to better connection. The hotel will give you the information to connect but you have to know how to setup your own computer to do this.

We found the rooms old but clean. The beds were not the best. The toilet got blocked and maintained wanted a tip to fix it. This is why we picked a different hotel a few days later when we passed thought Valladolid again. We stayed there March 3, 2009.

Please rate my tips when you find them interesting, useful or like the photos. Thanks. :)

Suites Sina: Cancun: Nice short term apartments.

by MikeySoft

We made reservations using the toll free number from the US. We reserved a standard room. Once we got there, we asked about a Junior Suite and if we could get a discount. The advertised internet price is $120 USD but we negotiated 1600 Pesos for 2 nights for the apartment. I used my credit card to pay. The 1600 Pesos were converted to $104.14 USD ($52.00 USD/Night) by my credit card company. An exchange rate of about 15.36 pesos per US dollar. The exchange rate changes all the time.

We really liked the place. We have an apartment on the second floor with a good view of the Lagoon and the main Hotel Zone across the water. The neighborhood mostly had private condos and a large mansion next to it.

There is a small grocery store within walking distance on the main road but we drove to it. A bus stop is near the grocery store to go downtown or along the Hotel Zone but we had a car so didn't use it. We later found a large grocery store in downtown Cancun.

They had wireless internet in the lobby but you had to pay extra so we didn't use it. The place has a pool and is on the lagoon.

Few people were staying there at the time (March 1&2, 2009). This was before the swine flu.

Please rate this tip and my other tips should you find them useful, interesting, or like the photos.

.
The apartment had a large living room, a small but very useable kitchen when pots and pans and other things we could use. The bed room hand the view of the water and a balcony.

The owner was very friendly. We told her we plan to stay there about a week later so we could catch our flight home. She said no problem and gave us her card with a local toll free number. I called her a few days before the end of the trip. We ended up spending the last few nights in Playa Del Carmen so I called her again to cancel.

Hotel Marionetas: A Charming B & B in Merida, Yucatán

by ronmol

Hotel Marionetas is a mom and pop operation, a small hotel/B & B, conveniently located a few blocks from the zócala, or main plaza of Merida. It is clean, bright, and charming, the rooms enclosing a small courtyard, with a miniscule pool.

I recommend this accomodation without hesitation

Location, location, location.

The Flycatcher Inn: A Hidden B & B in Uxmal

by ronmol

Santiago, a very pleasant Mayan man, and Kristina, his equally charming American wife, run this small B&B, in the Mayan village of Santa Elena, minutes from Uxmal. It is very inexpensive, simple but comfortable; you are deep in the heart of Yucatán, but with English-speaking hosts. There is only one other Anglo expatriate in Santa Elena--a British-Canadian woman, who runs a funny little restaurant close by, called, of all things, The Pickled Onion! Quite decent food, but of course there are a couple of other local restaurants where the food is genuine Mexican-Mayan.

I recommend the Flycatcher Inn without hesitation. Bring cash (pesos). Banking is at a very primitive level in Santa Elena!

No pool, no great views, no hot tub. Chickens, and dogs, are in the dirt road leading up to the gate. Explore the little village of Santa Elena, where Spanish is a second language. Smile and say "Buenos Dias." You are sure to get a smile back.

Hotel El Meson del Marques: Great hotel near the ruins

by dln6874

Very nice hotel with many clean rooms. Prices are pretty reasonable and it was one of the nicest places we stayed while in Mexico.

The main benefit here is the location. It is close to Chitzen Itza & Ek' Balum, so coming from Cancun, you could check out Chitzen Itza, then check in to the hotel & eat lunch, go up to Ek' Balum, come back for swim & dinner, and then back to Chitzen Itza for the light show. The restaurant is also good, and the garden & the pool was very nice too. Right across from the street is the main plaza which makes for a nice place to walk around or relax at. You can also get your basic needs at small grocery stores, pharmacies, & banks in the town.

Hotel Zone Cancun: Cancun Omni

by Matt420

We spent one night at the Cancun Omni and was not impressed at all. Here are a few of the problems with this hotel:

1. Very loud. There is not carpet anywhere (which is understandable because of the sand) but you can hear every person walking down the hallways at all times of the night. Our room was roughly 75 yards from the elevator and we could hear people talking while waiting for the elevator.

2. Showers. Each time we turned the water on, there was a very loud popping noise for about 30 seconds. Sounded like the pipes were about to break through the wall. Also, after you have set the temp to what you like, with no warning, the water would become scalding hot or freezing cold for about 5 seconds. Just long enough for you to jump back and swear a little.

3. Booze prices. We found the prices to be more expensive than in the U.S. One beer cost $4.50 USD! I don't know what the price for a mixed drink was but I'm sure it was shocking.

The Omni does have quite a few very nice pools with swim up bars and the beach, as always in Cancun, was beautiful.
