  • Fiesta Americana Merida - Mérida
    Fiesta Americana Merida
    by Sandi-2004
We didn't stay at the Fiesta Americana but we had dinner in their Los Almendros restaurant and looked around the hotel. The food was excellent and the hotel looks as though it would be a great place to stay if you are looking for this type of accommodation. We prefer a smaller hotel or B & B when we travel. But from what I saw of the Fiesta Americana, I would recommend it.

This is a 5 star hotel with all of the amenities. It has 5 floors and was built in 1994. It's located on a major avenue about 5 minutes by taxi from the main historical district downtown.

  • A cool pool in the tropics - Mérida
A cool pool in the tropics
    by Sandi-2004
We stayed at this gorgeous and reasonably-priced B & B while in Merida. It's well located a few blocks N. of the town square allowing one to easily walk to the key points of interest. The main house is luxuriously furnished and the two guest rooms at the back of the tropical garden beyond the pool are in separate buildings, casitas, about 12 feet apart. Each is spacious with a large bathroom.

Every morning a full breakfast is served on the patio, weather permitting. David Reed, owner and manager of Los Arcos, lives in the main house and is a welcoming and gracious host. His staff is also very helpful and kind. We felt right at home. And the pool feels great on those very hot days in Merida.

Beautifully decorated, very private rooms with comfortable beds, gorgeous tropical gardens & wonderful pool with no restrictions on swimming hours, welcoming ambiance, delicious breakfast served whenever you wish and great location are some of the outstanding qualities of this peaceful and quiet little paradise in a big city.

Rates are $65.00 USD for a room with one dble bed and $85.00 USD for two dbles compared to $100 and more for the large hotels.

    Guesthouse at Mayaland
    by Sandi-2004
The photo shows one of the many guesthouses on the grounds of Mayaland. We loved the beauty and comfort of this resort. The 100 acres of landscaped grounds, the separate thatched roof bungalows, the large, beautifully appointed rooms and comfortable beds, the porch with a hammock, chairs and table, and the outdoor and indoor dining rooms with delicious food made staying here, right next to Chichen Itza, an outstanding experience.

  • Hotel Villa Maria - Mérida
    Hotel Villa Maria
    by karenincalifornia, 4 more photos
We stayed in a lovely little hotel in the historical center of Merida - the Hotel Villa Maria. The hotel has only 11 rooms and is an impeccably restored 17th century colonial mansion. The rooms, center courtyard and dining rooms are beautiful. Location was perfect. Close enough to the Plaza Grande to be centrally located, but off a few blocks, so traffic was not a problem. The rooms were spotlessly clean and very spacious. The owner, Octavio Monsalvo is the perfect host and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable.

The beds at Villa Maria are extremely comfortable, and I loved the layout of the rooms. The sleeping area is on the first floor, and is furnished with some antiques (although the bed is modern and new). The bathroom in each room is in an upstairs loft. The hot water never ran out and the shower heads were good. Clean linens were replaced daily. A/C worked great and was adjusted with a remote control.

The restaurant serves 3 delicious meals (the chef is outstanding), and has a bar (making the best margaritas in the city, by the way). If you are an early riser (like before 7:30 am), don't expect breakfast to be waiting for you. The morning at Hotel Villa Maria starts at a leisurely pace, which was fine with us. If we needed to get going, we just walked down the street to Cafe Habana.

The hotel has a unique layout in that all the rooms open up directly from the central courtyard, which also serves as a restaurant. However, this was never a problem for us. The rooms are very private and quiet. It was obvious to us that when the mansion was restored, particular care was taken to retain as much as possible from its former glorious days.

    by Sandi-2004
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Westin Regina while in Cancun. I loved the modern design. The lobby is open to the outside, the rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. Also, the pool area is quiet, no music or bingo games as we experienced at other hotels when we stopped in to look around.

And, It was a good location for us because it was at the south end of the island closer to the airport than the other hotels.

  • The Hyatt in Merida - Mérida
    The Hyatt in Merida
    by Sandi-2004
The Hyatt is huge and offers all the amenities of a 5 star hotel. We had a late lunch in one of the restaurants there, Peregrina Bistro, and it was delicious. If you like a big hotel, this one looks great and has everything one might want or need. It is located near the center of Paseo de Montejo in the hotel zone - just across from the Fiesta Americana and the Holiday Inn. It takes a little longer to walk downtown than if you stay in El Centro but you can be there by taxi in 5 minutes.

We visited this hotel only while we had a delicious seafood buffet in Peregrina Bistro, one of the restaurants in the Hyatt. The food was outstanding with many Yucatecan recipes. The service was excellent also.

  • Hotel Trinidad rooms (pic from hotel website) - Mérida
    Hotel Trinidad rooms (pic from
    hotel website)
    by Redlats
Hotel Trinidad is three blocks from downtown. As with many of the smaller hotels in Mérida, it is in an old colonial mansion. You have to walk through a plant-filled courtyard and around corners to find your room.

There are a number of different styles of rooms - with or without attached washrooms and with or without airconditioning. Our room had two twin beds and the bathroom was clean. Generally we found that budget hotels supplied soap and a small towel, but no shampoo. I could survive with the one towel, but my wife brought her own towel to supplement the little hotel towel.

As we were not sure about the noise level in the city with open windows, we went for the air conditioning. The cost in March (off-season) was 250 pesos for the room.

Staying at the Hotel Trinidad includes a basic breakfast of toast, jam and coffee.

One thing was tricky - the advertising on the door of the hotel mentioned a swimming pool, but when we asked we found out they mean that you have access to the pool at a second hotel owned by the same people -- the Hotel Trinidad Galeria. Of course, not many people bother walking the few blocks to the other hotel, swimming, getting dressed again to walk back to your Hotel Trinidad.

I have found chap hostals or hotels in downtown. They are good and clean. The best is Hyatt i think.

  • The upstairs terrace - Mérida
    The upstairs terrace

Staying at Luz En Yucatan is like staying at your grandmother's house...the one you really like, who has this great big house and lets you put your feet up anywhere. She lets you have a sip of her brandy if you want, swim in her pool, and lie around all day without telling you that you really ought to get out and see a museum.
Luz is run by a wonderful bunch of women, headed by Madeline. It's a rambling old colonial building, with all sorts of nooks, crannies, rooms, decks, stairs, gardens and a great big pool. Every room is different and they all have kitchens.
Its right in the center of town, close to everything. But once you close the front door behind you, you can't tell. It's quiet and peaceful, except for the parrot who likes to make sure you know he's there. She gets all sorts of interesting guests, and you can choose to keep to yourself, or mingle in one of the many common rooms that are populated with couches, hammocks, chairs, games, and even a little free bar. You're on your honor not to drink everything that's there, and if you finish a bottle, you are expected to replace it.
The whole place runs with a loose sort of logic, and its a wonderful way to stay in the Yucatan.

Pool, every room has a kitchen, plus there's a big community kitchen and dining room. The nicest room, if you can get it, is the penthouse.

Hotel Posada Toledo: An Old Mexican Mansion Converted

  • My first view outside as a 29 yr old - Mérida
My first view outside as a 29
    yr old
    by cat-alunya
When we walked in the main gate of The Hotel Posada Toledo, the entryway and courtyard were magnificent, reminscent of old colonial mexico & old money. A bit sick from something I'd eaten, I headed straight to my room. I must admit- my first thought was- YUCK! I asked my husband to find us another hotel, but we had already paid our $20 bux for the room (whoop-dee-doo) and noone else thought it was that bad. I got more sick & laid in my bed. It was the eve of my 29th birthday and I was a car fume away from vomitting. The bathroom was clean, but super small and bare-bones. One hand sized towel for 2 & a bathmat.
The room itself was large but had fluorescent lighting that illuminated the dusty scraped up walls and gave the room an overall glow of sick green and yellow, that pissed me off (I'm a sucker for good lighting). The floors were tiled in a beautiful manor but the colonial style twin wooden beds, while cute, were old and shakey. My emotions were mixed on the place, until I woke up the next morning, 29 years old and opened my door. The picture above was my first exterior view of life at 29 and it was breathtaking. Suddenly, my stomach felt better, the room looked more charming and I turned off the flurescent lights and let the misty sun sift through the door.
It was hotter than a *&^%^&*^#, but we retired to the open air state room on ground level that was now a small 7-8 table breakfast room with huge old portaits of the lineage that once owned and lived in this enormous estate.
All in all, nice breakfast, great look and for the price, you just can't beat it. But, if you're looking for a place that feels like the sheets are new, smells fresh and perhaps adorns the bathroom with cute little travel size soaps and shampoos...and has more than a yellowy-cigar smoke stained stand up shower- this is not the place! Still- what a memory. And a burger king that sells ponchos along with Whoppers close by ended up saving my sick stomach. Go figure. I just needed some good old American fast food.

Views and architecture are truly impressive.
Woman who runs the desk likes to collect pens, so bring one with you that is cool and you don't mind giving away.
Rooms are a little dingey- but so old world and cool it's hard to hate it for too long.
    Close to everything in Merida!
