MEXICO'S SOUTHERN TIP CURVES EAST
by Sandi-2004
Until I started planning this trip, I hadn't paid close attention to the way Mexico curves so far to the east in the southern tip. Merida is actually straight south of New Orleans, LA, and Cancun is very close to Cuba. The Yucatan is less than 200 miles from the Equator, so bring you're sun screen and get a hotel with a pool because the sun is intense. I had a good natural sunscreen and had no problems.
Enlarging the map will show you exactly where the Merida & Cancun are located.
Progreso - A nearby beach
by Redlats
Progreso is a beach town - 1/2 hour north of Mérida -- easily accessible by public transport ($1.25 each way). Most of the time it is a sleepy Mexican town (pop. 46,000). This changes during summer holidays (July and August) and over the Easter school break when Meridanos (the inhabitants of Mérida) flock to the sea shore for a break. During winter, Progreso is the home of many Canadian and American snowbirds.
Progreso locals are involved in fishing or supporting the tourist trade, and the town is a centre for supplies, for cruise ship docking, and for gringo snowbirds.

One of the best
by karenincalifornia about Hotel Villa Maria
The Hotel Villa Maria has one of the finest restaurants in Merida. We ate dinner there on New Year's Eve, and they put on a delicious prix fixe dinner. Presentation was superb, and the chef prepares scrumptious continental dishes. The ambiance is beautiful.
Breakfast is not that early here, but if you can wait until 8:00 am to eat, you'll be fine.
Dining is available either in the central outdoor courtyard (which has a retractable cover for inclement weather) or in the air-conditioned dining room. The wine list is varied and good, and Hotel Villa Maria, in my opinion, made the best margaritas in all of Merida.
We also at breakfast here twice. Everything was delicious. On the top of my list was their coffee (yes, their coffee is wonderful), their yogurt, and sweet bread (not sweetbreads, but bread with a sugar topping). They had many other breakfast dishes as well, egg dishes, omelets, and other breakfast dishes. This was a very good way to start the day.
Next to the Church
by Kindberg37
If you are looking at the church you'll see a small "alley" running along the south side. Down here they were having an art installation while we were there. I'm not sure if that is always there, or something that rotates, but it was fun to see the sculptures and the people walking along.
Museum of the Music of Yucatan
by AnnaLupilla
"Trova", the music of Yucatan, is considered the cultural heritage of the people of Yucatan, to the degree that a museum was established in its honor. Here the visitor will find oil portraits and bronze sculptures of the most important representatives of this musical genre: Ricardo Palmerin, Guty Cardenas, Cirilo Baqueiro Preve "Chancil", Ermilo Padron Lopez, Juan Acereto, Armando Manzanero and Pastor Cervera; as well as original music sheets and songbooks.
The museum is located near the Park of Mejorada; and is the site of weekly concerts.
