Quiet little B&B in Merida

We spent three nights in this quiet little B&B. Despite it being located just outside of Merida's historic limits, it was extremely convenient to all the sights. It was an easy walk to many restaurants, the main zocalo, many parks, and even the Paseo de Montejo.
Our room was exquisitely designed and decorated by the owner, and the pool area was a refreshing welcome from the hot city streets. Cascadas is a garden oasis which makes you forget that you are in middle of a city.

Delighted with Cascadas de Merida

Delighted at Cascadas de Merida !

I enjoyed a wonderful 3 day getaway at Cascadas de Merida, a B&B in Santiago, downtown Merida. It was all the brochure promised and more ! The room was a heavenly peaceful haven by the pool with the sounds of cascading waterfalls to soothe any hot and weary traveller ! The beds are really good and the showers are delightful...a glass encased enclosure with a waterfall while you shower ... I loved it ! This B&B is a quality place, with wonderfully interesting hosts who provided me with all the answers and information I needed. They set up tours to the ruins for me , pointed me in the best directions to do my shopping, provided wonderfully sumptuous authentic home cooked breakfasts (we are not talking continental breakfast, here !)
The hosts Ellyne & Chucho, are wonderfully engaging and fun and the staff is terrific ! I will definitely be going again !

Cascadas de Merida is beautiful!!!

by TripAdvisor Member KelleyTexas

We stayed here in January and it was unique, beautiful, within walking distance to the town square, quiet, safe, affordable and the breakfast was delicious. This place is very small (only casitas) and private. You would never know from the outside how nice it is on the inside. Each room was decorated very thoughtfully including an alarm clock and 4 big, fluffly towels. We were very comfortable and happy here. Coffee was ready at 7 and breakfast served at 8 and both were very delicious and satisfying. The emphasis here is on taking care of the guests. It is obvious that they love what they do and take great pride in the place and their ability to help in any way they can. We had a wonderful time and will certainly stay there again if we decide to go back to Merida. One note - the cab drivers and locals did not seem to know the place by name, so be sure to get good directions before you get there. ENJOY!!

Las Cascadas de Merida - a must!

by TripAdvisor Member saltwaterart

Las Cascadas is a refreshing alternative to the big commercial hotels in Merida. It is located very near the airport in the old colonial part of the city, and near to a couple of very good restaurants. This is really a B&B and the owners, Ellyne & "Chucho" Basto are wonderful hosts. This is an ideal & reasonable location for travellers overnighting near the airport, or simply visitng the City of Merida. We gve it a "ten".

December in Merida

This was my first visit to Mexico and I used Trip Advisor prior to booking with Ellyne and Chucho at Cascadas de Merida. I was completely satisfied and my expectations were met. They are phenomenal people who take care of the guests. Miguel and his mom prepared excellent breakfasts each morning. On one night the hosts coordinated dinner with a local family. It is the personal touch and care that make this a gem of a place in the middle of bustling Merida. Many thanks!

Fabulous! Fantastic! Loved it!

Cozy. Hospitable. Homey. Beautiful. Relaxing. Wonderful.
That's how my new husband and I would describe this Merida oasis. After having our wedding in Playa del Carmen, we spent four nights at the wonderful Cascadas de Merida. Owners Ellyne and Chucho are full of helpful information and they have built the perfect setting for a relaxing visit to this great city. The homemade breakfasts, included in the price, were different everyday and yummy! We will go back here FOR SURE!!

Let me tell you about a B&B we just found... Country-Mexico City-Merida B&B-Cascadas de Merida Hostess-Ellyne Basto First impression-What a fantastic gem! Details-Wow! Where do we start? This hostess knows about customer service. On our second visit, unannounced, no reservations, she immediately responds, "Let me back my car out ." so we could have secure, off street parking. Then Ellyne wants to know if we are hungry. Customer, costumer, costumer. Service, service, servcice! We are convinced that this woman writes 'hostessing' books on the side. Ellyne has a brooklyn accent and speaks fluent Spanish. What a trip! Actually a voyage... Cascadas de Merida is themed on waterfalls. How many you ask. Don't know-kept finding more. The walls of the interior court around the pool weep, no, make that cascade water. The glass walled bathroom showers are surrounded by waterfalls. the glass topped night stands in the rooms emit a soft green light from the water flowing under them. No, can't explain it... we just appreciate it. The walls leading to the pool are a beautiful hand painted jungle mural that makes you want to feel the fern fronds.

The air conditioned rooms are way more than comfortable, very, very clean, without being over the top luxurious. (More of Ellyne again.) Did I mention the glass walled showers are easily large enough for two? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!

About the breakfast part of the B&B. The native cook, Aurora, speaks only Spanish but smiles fluently in all languages. Aurora's portions are prodigious, ask for two huevos revueltos and you get three. Her traditional turkey dish breakfasts are more like lunch or dinner. Oops-almuerzo o cena.

Ellyne has all of Merida in her grasp and is happy to share her knowledge. Need a tour arranged? Easy. Recommend a hospital-easy again. or a doctor-done. Want a Spanish language emmersion class? Just ask.

Is this the best B&B in Merida-don't know. We're not looking further. We plan many trips to Merida and Ellyne is one of the reasons. We can't wait to go home to Cascades de Merida again.

Lasting impression-what a fantastic gem. Ellyne and the B&B.

Terrific

by TripAdvisor Member SeattleTravler

The B&B is terrific, food is great, Elyne is a wonderful hostess and makes you feel like family. Aurora and Miguel cook traditional breakfasts and are just delightful. Miguel wears a constant smile. We travel a lot and found Cascadas to be absolutely excellent. We will return.

Isle of tranquility in busy Merida

by TripAdvisor Member outabalto

Ellyne & "Chucho" Basto are born hosts. Their lovely, gracious and tranquil inn was the perfect home base for exploring the busy and fascinating city of Merida, walking all day amidst beautiful colonial architecture, local ruins & towns, tranquil beaches, returning to soak our feet in the courtyard pool, enjoy a cerveza & contemplate dinner. It is quiet, not on a bus route, the breakfasts are bountiful and delicious, and our hosts could not have been more accomodating or delightful - we'd credit them with the beautiful weather if we could. Short of that they were founts of helpful information on restaurants - lots of good ones nearby, be sure to check the book of menus - and local lore. Chucho grew up in & loves this house, which he has painstakingly and beautifully remodeled, and it shows.

We Loved This Place!

by TripAdvisor Member marge256

"A good B&B should have good beds and good breakfasts." This is a comment from Ellen and Chucho Basto, owners of Cascadas, and their place way more than fills the bill. We stayed there for 10 days this January, and loved it. The rooms are generous and comfortable (wait till you take a shower looking out at your own private cascade!), the hammocks and pool are wonderfully relaxing, and the breakfasts are sumptuous. Who needs lunch? I'm even trying to reproduce Chucho's guacamole omelets at home.

Cascadas is not only a great place to visit, it's also a great place to relax. It's wonderful to come back after a walk around the city and spend the afternoon alternating between lying in a hammock surrounded by lush plants and swimming (yes, actual room to swim!) in a sparkling clean pool. The sounds of rushing 'cascadas' (which don't run at night) drown out the city noises and create a marvelous space to just do whatever.

Not only is their B&B wonderful, so are Ellen and Chucho. Like family - in the good way. They helped us find good places to eat, booked sight seeing trips for us, even took us out to replace my glasses frames after I broke them. In short, they made us welcome and did whatever thay could to see we were enjoying our stay in Merida.
