Hotel Caribe, Merida

$50-60 per room

Unique Quality: Plenty of atmosphere in this colonial building perfectly located 2 minutes from the main square but surprisingly quiet location. Entrance/reception on the dark side, with little natural light and predominantly dark wood, and friendliness dependent on who was on duty (but never rude, some more helpful than others). But grand sweeping staircase leads to the rooms, all built round inner courtyard. Some rooms bigger than others, but all more than adequate, with double bed and single, ensuite etc (a little old fashioned and have seen better days, but nothing that would 'offend'). Cute little pool on the roof with rooftop view across to the cathedral (which was more than welcome after a day wandering round the city). Restaurant in the courtyard on ground floor very pleasant for breakfast (apparently not bad in the evening, but didn't try it - the location is such that there are many other options within a few minutes walk).
Not a brilliant hotel but more than pleasant and not bad value for the money in comparison to others in the area.

More about Hotel Caribe

Great location, lots of charm

by TheWanderingCamel about Hotel Caribe

Merida's Hotel Caribe won us over right from the start - the only room they had available for our first night was the hotel's only suite - very swish - spacious, with lots of old-world charm and a view from the balcony of the Parc Hidalgo - and we had booked and paid for something far more ordinary! They did move us after that, to a room that opened onto the roof terrace, so what we lost in grandeur, we made up for in a great view of Merida cathedral every time we came and went. The reception staff were helpful, breakfast was good, the chambermaids were so sweet - our rooms were always well cleaned, we were very happy with the standards of service. The hotel's central location means you can walk everywhere you want to get to in the centre of town. It's a lovely old building with a charming inner patio - and a very handsome resident toucan. The restaurant is set in this patio and there's also a cafe/bar that opens onto the square - great for a drink and people-watching. There's a small pool on the roof terrace, ideal for a quick dip at the end of a hot day's sightseeing.

Q: Air Fares "Why is it so much more expensive to fly into Merida as opposed to Cancun? The taxes seem to be the problem. Also, how safe is..."

A: "Hi, I had the same question with PHX vs LAX. Or NYC vs BDL, etc... MID vs CUN: Cancun is more well know destination compared to Merida. Cancun is settled down..."
