We arrived on a Saturday evening during carnival on the eve of Valentines day. Many streets were blocked off by barricades in the center of Merida for Carnival. We began to worry as our directions led us to a road block for the occasion. We called the hotel. They told us to pull over and await a hotel employee who promptly came to fetch us. He jumped in and led us around the block to the hotels private parking. I lost the car key in one of my bags, putting them there while unpacking. The attendant held a flashlight while I somewhat franticly pondered how I lost the key between the driver seat to the trunk. Found it!
We walked around the corner to the entrance where the owner and a hotel employee awaited us like concerned relatives. We were impressed already. Walking into the lobby gives the impression of very high ceilings. Indeed, it's open air courtyard with the spacious corridor on all sides of it. A lush mural. Plants. Beautiful furniture.
Unique Quality: Unique in terms of aesthetics and service. Wonderful beds and linens. Great shower. Thick towels. Neem shampoo and aloe lotion (for our sunburns). Every piece of furniture is unique; clearly chosen by a connoisseur. Two gift shops: a craft shop with handmade, fair trade wares from all 32 states of Mexico. And a boutique specializing in silk garments by two Mexican designers, best hotel gifts shops I've seen. Worth a look, even if you're not staying at Casa San Angel. An elegant cafe with baked goods made on premises.
