Luz en Yucatan

by ChrisTeeDee

We are staying in Merida for the first time and at the Luz en Yucatan. Does anyone have any info on this place? We have heard it is a nice place that used to be a nunnery at one time.

Yes, you're right. Merida is very nice colonial town, you will enjoy it. Besides it, you can visit Chichen Itza or Uxmal, which are beautifull and most favorit tourist destinations in the country.

It's a nice hostel. I work for a real estate company and have clients staying there, i have never heard a complain. It's an old colonial-mexican style home, well, set as hotel now. It has pretty good location, prices are good and the place has this casual enviroment, complety relaxed.

More questions?

I stayed at the Luz en Yucatan for 2 months a couple of years ago. I've been back many times for weekends since then.

It is truly a wonderful experience staying at the Luz. Like nothing else. I would spend every winter there if time allowed. The location is so perfect...right in the heart of the city. Once thru the doors at the Luz, it is like an oasis. So peaceful and charming.

I'm sure you will enjoy it as well as the great city of Merida.

Travel Tips for Mérida

The Invasion of the Bicycles

by caucamaya

Every Sunday morning, the city of Merida cordons off a 3-mile long route through the Centro Historico and allows the bicycles to take over. Bicycles can be rented in front of the Ayuntamiento (City Hall) in the Plaza Grande, or in front of the Plaza de la Bandera (by the MacDonalds on Paseo Montejo). Bicycling along the route allows you to take in and enjoy the whole Domingo en Merida scene (a confluence of shopping and food that happens every Sunday in the Centro), the shopping and dancing at Parque Santa Lucia and other special things that are different each Sunday along the route. We have seen a table set up for kids to do art, an exercise class (brief) for bicyclers to stretch their muscles, and a lot of happy kids and adults on bikes.

The bike ride is NOT for tourists... all the locals come out to play. Its great fun for the kids who live downtown and usually can't ride their bikes in the city streets. So if you are coming to visit and decide to participate, you'll get a nice taste of local life.

Celestùn - worth the trip

by Redlats

Celestùn is in a nature reserve where you can go on a boat tour that will feature many different birds including flamingos. I think that they promise that everyone will see flamingos. As well they have great seafood restaurants (no flamingo meat however). ;o) We went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico as well.

Celestùn is 100 km southwest (more west) of Mérida (approx. 1 ½ to 2 hour drive)

Visit my Celestùn page for more details.

a warren of rooms and levels

by leffe3 about El Meson

The terrible thing is that this was the best food we had in Merida and the best margaritas, as well as the nicest environment. But I can't remember where it is!
Head north (ie away from the Playa Mayor) along calle 60 (Parque Hidalgo on your right). You will take a left hand turn 2-3 blocks ahead and it will be on the right hand side of the road.....
Its worth finding! Tables on many levels some overlooking (or in) the tiny plant be-decked courtyard. Great food, great margaritas etc.....

Hacienda Yaxcopoil

by Pat&ZoAnn

We drove past this hacienda a couple of times before we recognized it as something that might be interesting. It is much more rustic than some of the others, as many haciendas have been developed as tourist services. A fellow just "adopted" us as we walked through the grounds.

Paseo de Montejo

by dek516

If you have time and don't mind a decent walk, check out the pretty street called Paseo de Montejo on the north end of town. The street is tree-lined and includes some of Merida's largest homes. The Anthropology Museum is on this street; although we didn't have time to go in, its exterior is very impressive.

I found the Paseo to be one of the few pleasant streets in Merida besides those directly surrounding the main square.
