anniston is located off of I-20 in northeast alabama. anniston is the county seat of calhoun county alabama. the area around anniston was undeveloped until the civil war. the confederacy established a iron furnace near present day downtown. in 1865 the forces of union general john croxton destroyed the town's iron furnaces. in 1872 daniel tyler and samuel noble founded the woodstock iron company. in 1879 tyler established the town of anniston. in 1917 fort mc cellan was built near anniston. during WWII the anniston army depot was also established in the area. for decades after WW II these two military facilities were the basis of anniston's economy. of interest to the tourist is anniston's museums and nearby cheaha state park. also anniston is close to the talladega motor speedway.
