decatur is a city located on the tennessee river in north central alabama. decatur is the county seat of morgan county alabama. decatur was originally called rhodes ferry landing and was established in the 1810's. the town of decatur was incorporated in 1821 and was named after stephen decatur. the most significant historic event in the town's history was the 1864 battle of decatur. union general robert s. granger destroyed the town with the exception of four buildings. new decatur was incorporated in 1889 and is now called the albany historic district. today the city of decatur's economy is based on manufacturing and cargo transit. of interest to the tourist is decatur's old decatur and albany historic districts and a couple of museums.
the most significant event in the history of decatur was the battle of decatur in october 1864. the battle of decatur was part of the franklin-nashville campaign during the american civil war. union general robert s. granger had occupied decatur and the confederate forces of john b. hood CSA tried to liberate the town. hood tried to cross the tennessee river north of town but were repulsed by granger's troops. after the battle granger burned the town and today there are only four ante bellum structures still standing in the city.
