Travel Tips for Fort Payne

Surrounding greenery is the draw

by BruceDunning

"Little River Falls CAnyon"

Nearby, about 15 miles from Ft. Payne is a 12 mile canyon called Little River Falls. It is a fabulous deep canyon with a river running through it. The scenery is the reason to stop at the 8+ pulloff spots to get a view.

"Ft. Payne History"

Ft. Payne became a fort in 1830's when Major John Payne built it to hold Cherokee Indians until they were "relocated" to Oklahoma. Today it has little trade left, with the knitting mills and sock manufacturing factories closed now.

Little River Canyon National Preserve

by PinkFloydActuary

A pretty site in the northeast corner of Alabama. The nearest town is Fort Payne (where the official visitor center is), then you have to drive out into the country a little bit to hit the scenic roads which follow the canyon. The road itself is a winding one, but worth the time, with a few stops and overlooks.
