Foreigners and even native...
Foreigners and even native English speakers may have difficulty understanding the local dialects (they may vary according to generation, race, region, and class). Never, ever tell anybody here that they talk funny; they are extremely sensitive about it.
Translation of frequently-heard terms:
'Well, hmmmmmm. . . .' -- in response to a question re: one's opinion -- translated as: 'I hate your guts.'
'Well, perhaps. . ' -- in response to a 'Would you recommend' or 'would you like to' question -- translates as 'No, absolutely not, under no circumstances, NEVER!'
Direct communication expressing negative opinions or feelings is simply not done here. Facial expression must be kept bland.
