Nice Hotel - But Problems with Charges
Nice hotel - clean - nice room & beds. Check in staff and wait staff at breakfast buffett - extremely friendly & helpful. Evening staff acted snippy & acted like it was our fault the room key did not work when returned in the evening. Breakfast buffett was comparable to most breakfast resturants - very good food. Problem - internet reservation and when checked in to hotel was told amount was $259.95, once returning home & checking bank statement, found hotel charged $300.00. Called and was told by staff there is a $25 one time fee charged at check in - just in case something is wrong with the room after check out. Explained even with a extra charge (that was not explained on internet or at check in) the bill should have only been $284.95, but the young lady could not explain why it was $300.00, she said it would be refunded to my back account. TRAVELER BEWARE - check you bank account once they have swiped your card.
Unique Quality: Nice indoor pool - had it to ourselves, was on 3rd floor at the end of the hallway - was quite except for occasional slammed door. Hot breakfast and fresh fruit. Chocolate chip cookies at end of day were very nice touch.

Mobile is an ideal spot for a major hurricane to make landfall. With the Mobile Bay cutting so far inland and the city itself lying right on the banks of the Mobile River and Bay, there could be major devastation. Fortunately, it's not happened recently, though it came close this past season as Ivan was slated to come right up the Bay until the last minute. (Gulf Shores, part of the barrier island chain that protects Baldwin and Mobile counties was not so lucky) If Mobile gets hammered, I'll change this to a warning or danger. Just to let you know, Mobile Bay has an average depth of only 7-10 feet. When a hurricane came through in the past, it sucked up all the water from the bay and dumped it right on the city. It does get flooded. Know that hurricanes CAN come through during the season. Right after I moved there in 1998, Hurricane Georges came through. Luckily all we received was lots of rain and some minimal damage. Ivan caused some structural damage earlier this year...and shown by the sign from the hotel where we stayed

Battleship Park just off I-10...

Battleship Park just off I-10 on the east side of Mobile. The Alabama can be seen from quite a ways away. Signs are plentiful and it is very easy to get to. A MUST SEE for those traveling through Mobile American Naval military history.
Half Century Time Capsule
by dustmon
I wish I could remember where in Mobile this was, but it's the only time capsule I have ever seen in person, ergo the pic.....The plaque says "Sealed during Celebration of American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976-----To Be Opened July 4, 2026"

Visit Mobile during the Mardi Gras Celebration
Visit the Battleship Park, where the USS Alabama, and the USS Drum are moored. They were bought by pennies raised by school children. Visit Bellengrath Gardens Arrive in time for the Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou La Batre, a shrimping town. The shrimp are in full trawl and are decorated beautifully; the Arch-Bishop blesses each one as they leave for deep water
The blooming of the azaleas in the Spring Mobile, not New Orleans, is the home of Mardi Gras. The celebration begins about two weeks before Ash Wednesday, and continues almost daily/nightly with parades, dances, etc., until Mardi Gras Day (Fat Tuesday).
Nice indoor pool - had it to ourselves, was on 3rd floor at the end of the hallway - was quite except for occasional slammed door. Hot breakfast and fresh fruit. Chocolate chip cookies at end of day were very nice touch.

Q:Ferry services? "I know there is a ferry from Mobile to Dauphin Island, but I'm looking for a little longer trip. Does anyone know of any ferry..."
A: "I don't think a ferry would be able to make the trip all the way to Mexico. But, look into Carnival Cruise -- they've got a ship that has a home port in Mobile!"
