Travel Tips for Mobile

The oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the U.S.

by RblWthACoz

It may not be the same in comparison to New Orleans Mardi Gras (some people might consider that a good thing), but Mobile does have it's own celebration. A lot more mild and less wild, it is still Mardi Gras. You should still be ready to catch beads and moon pies.

The parades begin in late January and end in early February and hold the same schedule as other Mardi Gras festivals. I

perdido key

by doug48

for those visiting alabama and want is go to the beach perdido beach is in my opinion the best gulf beach in the state. a visit to perdido key is a nice day trip when in the mobile area. to get to perdido key take I-10 east, then SR59 south in the direction of foley alabama. pass through foley south to gulf shores. from gulf shores go east past orange beach to perdido key. the drive from mobile takes about an hour and 15 minutes. for more information see my perdido key alabama and florida pages.

fort conde

by doug48

the original fort at this location was built out of wood by the french in 1711. in 1723 the french rebuilt the fort out of brick to protect mobile from british and spanish attack. mobile was taken over by the british in 1763 and the fort was renamed fort charlotte. in 1780 mobile was taken over by the spanish and the fort was renamed fort carlota. when the united states took over mobile in 1813 the fort's name returned to fort charlotte. for those interested in history and architecture fort conde is a very interesting place to visit in downtown mobile. admission is free.

Admiral Semmes Statue

by keeweechic

Semmes joined the Confederate Navy with the outbreak of the War for Southern Independence and was the commander on the CSS Sumter and CSS Alabama. He caused havoc on the U.S. merchant fleet around the world and sank the U.S. Navy sidewheel ironclad, USS Hatteras off Galveston, Texas. After the war he lived in Mobile and wrote an outstanding memoirs, "Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Between the States." He died in Mobile in 1877.

The United Methodist Church

by keeweechic

The original church was wooden and built in 1826. In 1890 it was moved around the corner to the current site. Originally the design was Gothic but was remodeled to Spanish Colonial architecture to 1917. We drove past this and I really liked it enough to go back for a photo.
