Semmes joined the Confederate Navy with the outbreak of the War for Southern Independence and was the commander on the CSS Sumter and CSS Alabama. He caused havoc on the U.S. merchant fleet around the world and sank the U.S. Navy sidewheel ironclad, USS Hatteras off Galveston, Texas. After the war he lived in Mobile and wrote an outstanding memoirs, "Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Between the States." He died in Mobile in 1877..
