black or white

Is it still the case that never the twain shall meet?
I know this is a sensitive subject but honest answers please.

On occasion, the twain meets in Alabama.

I went to Alabama for college (in Mobile) and I must say, it took at least a year to get over the culture shock, especially in this case. I am from the northeast and to be honest, I never really considered mixed race couples to be an issue ever. This isn't the case in Alabama...I don't think anyone would remark about it, but you'd get some looks and I heard comments being made later on.

At the same time, I think it depends where you are...in the cities, things are much more liberal. Mobile, for example has a lot of people coming in from other places for college, the coast guard, etc...therefore I found that city to be more progressive. Birmingham, as well. I spent time in Montgomery with a sorority sister and then with a coworker, who happened to be black. Those trips were competely opposite experiences. I had the best time ever with my coworker at her babyshower and hated the attitude of my sorority sister and her family...everything seemed to be about race and the old south with her white family and never was anything about race with my coworker. I also worked in a hosptial in Mobile where I was a minority on 2 counts: 1) a "yankee" and 2) I'm "white" Because I was from the north, I was accepted with open arms...but the other "white" girl who worked with me was regarded cautiously. Mostly because of some of the stuff she came up with.

I say make friends with everyone if you like who they are as a person. Who cares if you're crossing uncrossed "barriers"

I left Alabama with lots of friends...from every background, from all walks of life. I realized that I can't change the closemindedness of some people, but I also don't have to conform to their "ideals"

Wow...I know this is a LONG answer, but hopefully it sheds some light on the subject. It's not nearly as bad as the stereotype of Alabama...at least no where I went.

Thanks for all your responses. We're back from our trip now. We were unable as foreigners to sense any race prejudice but I know its hard for an outsider to detect these things sometimes.
We did experience a kind of prejudice at a luchtime diner near Hope Hull. It was obvious they would prefer us to have slid the money under the door and gone away. That, I think, was because we were not regulars - who knows. It was the only unwelcoming attitude we experienced during our entire stay in the south.

I have lived in Montgomery, Alabama for 12 years and this area is rich in Black History, so naturally there will always be a certain level of contention between races here. But the "twain meeting" is not the problem. The biggest problem in the deep south is the bogus religious (mostly Baptist) people being so judgemental and hypocritical of folks who arent just like them. Gay people can forget it. Interracial people can forget it. Hell, methodist can forget it because they "sprinkle" and don't "dunk." Being judgemental plagues the south, which is ignorance. Its not skin color that triggers it.

Travel Tips for Montgomery

Packing List

by TamiKane85

In the summer, shorts and a tank is fine. The sky is blue, the sun is bright, the birds are out, the grass is green, and the land is open! Perfect place! Depends on weather. Camera is a MUST! This place is TOO beautiful to let go! A hat! the sky is nice and clear, so the sun is out pretty strong.

Alabama Judicial Building

by Stephen-KarenConn

This magnificent old building is home of the Alabama Supreme Court, Courts of Criminal and Civil Appeals, the State Law Library and the Administrive Office of Courts. Visitors are invited to come and learn about history of the legal profession and judicial branch of government through exhibits which are on display.

In recent months this building drew national attention when the Alabama Supreme Court banned the display of the Ten Commandments here. Those same Ten Commandments are currently on tour around the country.
