On the south lawn of the Alabama State Capitol building is a half-moon shaped walkway along which are displayed flags of the fifty United States. A Plaque reads:

Hank Williams Statue
by Stephen-KarenConn
This life size statue of Hank Williams, one of Montgomery's favorite sons, is in Lister Hill Plaza. It is across the street from City Auditorium, the site of many of the legendary country singer's performances. Following his tragic and untimely death on New Year's Day, 1953, Hank's funeral was also held at the City Autitorium.
AlitanLH's Montgomery Page
by AlitanLH
Alita lived in Montgomery for 30 years. Grew up there during the Civil Rights Movement--interesting times. Lots of history in the area and many beautiful sites.Suggest visitors take time to tour downtown--the capital is a beautiful building, but don't miss the Southern Poverty Law Center--experiencing the Civil Rights Monument is a must. While downtown be sure to grab a bite to eat at Chris' Hotdog Stand--best chili dogs in the world. Another must see is the Shakespeare Festival Theatre--a wonderful venue. If you enjoy touring old cemetaries, Oakwood is filled with monuments and brick paths, and the Oakwood Annex is where Hank Williams is buried. Interesting fact: although Audrey appears to be buried next to Hank, her body was never exhumed from her gravesite several feet away. At the time of his death, Hank was not married to Audrey. The whole gravesite scenario appears to have been devised because she is Hank Jr's mom. I know all of this because my family is buried on the opposite side of the circle from Mr. Williams and I was present during the "Audrey addition".Just another example of how things are not always as they appear in the South.
