What and where to do in March!?!?
by naterwilson
My girlfriend and I are making an Alaskan trip the first week of March. I'm doing the winter thing though because I'm taking a flight to Bettles to check out the northern lights and to pop the question. Can anyone give me some pointers on a winter visit. All I have now is to watch the start of the race while in Anchorage.
Thanks!

Heres a handy webpage for you, if you ahvent already been there

Fort Yukon was -47 F this morning. If youre looking for some warm clothes in Fairbanks try Big Rays or the prospector. Sounds like a cool trip! Good luck

If you are active people there are a ton of activities to do and it is usually the best snow of the year. You can do everything from renting snowmobiles, cross country skiing, Alyeska resort for downhill or snowboarding, hiking or snowshoeing, etc, etc. Tell me what you like to do and I will give some suggestions.

Man I am up for anything. I will be in Anchorage Saturday through Wednesday, then Bettles for three nights, then Anchorage one more night. I was thinking that I could do the Snowboarding lessons on the last Saturday in case we get hurt. I think I might want to do the snowmobile rentals. That would be cool. My girlfriend hasn't really done much in her life. It seems like everytime we do something it is the first time she has done it. In Bettles we are doing the cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and dogsledding. What else can I bet on for Anchorage??? Thank a million. We will be there tomorrow granted our jet gets off the ground. We have weather right now.

Travel Tips for Anchorage
Log Cabin Visitor Center
by mht_in_la
Located in a small log cabin right downtown on the cornor of 4th Av and F St is Anchorage's Visitor Center (4th Ave is the biggest shopping strip in Anchorage). The Center is relatively small; no theater or exhibitions, only handouts and brochures. But I did find it helpful in checking the tidal bores schedule (see my Turnagain Arm tip in must see area). Also you'll see a few homeless people hanging around.
The building itself is pretty interesting -- log cabin with green grass on roof. Around the cabin they grow all kinds of colorful flowers. Behind the cabin there's a metal arch, as seen in photo.
Conversation
by Sharrie
Friendly people... I met this lady. Her name is Liz Morgan.
We were heading towards town at about the same time.
Met her at information counter.
Due to the infrequent bus service, we decided to share a cab.
A very interesting lady.
We started a conversation on the taxi.
She was originally from Boston.
Had been staying in Anchorage for many years. We talked about how she likes living in Anchorage. About VT for awhile.
I like talking to her.
She felt like someone I've know for sometime.
Don't know why.
There are just people like that around.
People whom you feel like you've known them in your past life or something!
Anyway, we had a very interesting conversation & she showed me part of Anchorage which I would never have seen!
Thanks, Liz. Hope to see you on VT soon! :-)
Watch salmon run - Ship Creek
by Scandic
This strange platform in the heart of Anchorage is not the prettiest thing, but certainly an interesting one. Located near railway station, the Ship Creek runs throught the town, bringing more than 24 million gallons of rushing water from Eklutna glacier.
The viewing platform offers visitors an opportunity to watch salmon run while fishermen attempt to hook them.
Sp every summer, around June, the platform is full of people, locals and tourists, watching the salmon running and the high jumps of this king fish.
Skiing
by goingsolo
Cross country skiing is popular in Anchorage. Girdwood, which is less than an hour south of Anchorage, features Alyeska, the state's largest ski resort. There are also in town trails at Chugagh State Park, Kincaid Park and Turnagain Pass. Ski equipment rentals are available in downtown Anchorage.
Eklutna Lake
by AlaskaGirl03
About 30 minutes north of Anchorage there is a place called Eklutna Lake. It is a breathtaking lake fed by a glacier. There are campsites and trails. If you take the trail back about 11 miles, you are at the base of the glacier! Great place!
